I’m not sure what this manhwa is portraying because your take is full of misconceptions.
1. Ines herself created her reputation as a crow. Manhwa left all of that out. Her attitude when she attended events showcased this. This was intentionally done on her part partly to keep people away from her and partly as her scheme to keep people thinking Carcel is too good for her so that it creates the psychology in his mind that she’s beneath her and that way he would never fall for her. This was all cut from the manhwa to make Ines more sympathetic but there are small hints in the manhwa nevertheless. This is exactly why Ines was heavily criticized by Korean novel readers in the beginning. It’s not just Carcel who was criticized. The author even wrote that the manhwa is too one-sided in showcasing Carcel’s flaws while hiding Ines’s flaws.
2. It’s a promiscuous society so I’m not sure why you’re talking about Carcel’s reputation influencing her relationship with her mother. Even in prior timelines when Ines had a faithful fiancé, like the crown prince, her relationship with her mother was terrible. During marriage to Carcel in this current timeline, her mother even wrote her a letter telling her it’s shameful how she’s shacked up with her husband in a small house and it’s not for her to warn her husband’s bed. She said it’s for his mistresses to do that. So how much does her mother care about Carcel’s life before marriage.
3. People treat her better when she’s married because she finally started acting friendly with people. What the heck are you saying? It’s like we’re reading different stories. Was Ines friendly to other people before marriage? No. She kept her distance. It’s only when she began to PRETEND to be a good wife and host parties that she began to interact with people in a social way for the first time in this life. Let’s get this straight, she only became happy because she began to change BECAUSE of Carcel. Ines even says in the novel that Carcel is influencing her to think sincerely of people and she was troubled by it until she began to accept that she wanted to live a different life this time. That’s why she’s changing and her brother and her waiting lady and her mother-in-law was so surprised by her changes. In fact the whole of Mendoza was surprised by how much she had changed in a year.
4. Ines also delayed the marriage. Don’t see why you’re blaming only him. She shut him out for four years and when she felt she was getting too old for marriage and implanting her plan, she showed up in front of him like the opportunist she is to remind him that they need to marry so that she can put her plan into action to use him and dump him. May I remind you that’s how she repays someone who helped her and her past lover in the previous timeline. She has utterly no sense of gratitude to the person who kept her alive, her baby alive and her lover alive for a night when the soldiers were looking for them to take her to the capital to be punished for humiliating the imperial family.
5. Unlike you, at least Ines knows she’s the one who chose him and endangered his life since he was a 6 year old. That’s what ep81 just showed. She chose him and never thought of what could happen to him and only recently found out that that innocent child was bullied and almost died because she chose to use his life for her selfish purpose without any regard for him. Also, due to her pointing her finger at him, the empress got involved and bestowed the engagement. That meant as an heir, he could not dance the engagement. What about her? Carcel finds out in the novel, before the married, that Ines could’ve let her father canceled the engagement but she adamantly insisted on keeping it and prevented her father from canceling it? Why? Because she wanted to use Carcel, the man that helped her and her past lover stay in a safe house for the night while the soldiers hunting them. She’s such a good, kind and morally upright person/sarcasm.
6. I’m glad you don’t condone cheating. That means you shouldn’t be putting Ines on a pedestal. After all, she screwed/dubcon a complete stranger in the previous timeline but the manhwa covered it up. Check out ep11. She’s sitting on top of the crying boy with a cold, expressionless face. Why? She was engaged to the crown prince and in a 10 year relationship with him. What does she do? The painters come to paint, she saw the face of the painter looked good, then she proceeded to go to his bedroom late at night naked and dubcon him. Let me remind you that not only was she in a romantic relationship with the crown prince, she was engaged and supposed to marry him in THREE mere months. So please don’t be a hypocrite because if engagement, and not a romantic relationship is all it takes to be considered a cheater, then Ines more than cheated. Not only did she cheat, she screwed a stranger with dubious consent. Poor man cried out when the noble’s daughter and crown prince’s fiancé entered his room, UNINVITED, and naked. When she screwed him and he saw the blood, he panicked and started to cry saying he’s sinned because he took the virginity of the crown prince’s fiancé when he wasn’t even the one at fault. She was. To shut him up, she used her techniques on him. DUBIOUS consent. At least all of Carcel’s sexual relations were completely consensual on all sides. It’s something that neither Oscar or Ines can claim in this story.
It was her fault. Her father wanted to can el the engagement and she insisted on keeping the engagement so that he can use Carcel for her intended purpose.
She didn’t have to be engaged to him. There was Enrique, Dante and Leonardo. Dante would’ve been perfect for her because he supports the imperial family and he already have hidden mistresses all over Mendoza. She could’ve easily gotten a divorce from him.
Just like it didn’t give her the right to cheat on the crown prince in the previous timeline and pull an entirely innocent stranger into her plot to use someone’s life to escape Oscar. How did that turn out? He ended up dead and that’s why she blames herself in this current timeline for DRAGGING a completely innocent man who had absolutely nothing to do with her into her plot to escape crown prince Oscar.
About your ending declarations, basically you’re judging a person solely by their sexual past/experience barring everything else. Let me ask you, has Carcel used and destroyed anyone’s life? Has he led anyone to their death? Has he plotted evil against anyone in his heart? You say he’s scum for having 100% consensual relationships with several women whose lives he didn’t destroy nor negatively impacted in any way. Ines herself said in the novel that Carcel never harmed any of those women. She especially hates when he talks of his past as though atoning for the way he lived because she knows in her heart she was never sincere towards him during their engagement period and she’d actively been plotting to prevent him from falling for her to avoid complicating her end goal.
Despite Ines’s many flaws, I have never once called her a bad name. That’s because I sincerely still like her. I’ve seen others criticize her for causing the death of an innocent man and her child and using a 6 year old child and not once have I seen them call her a bad name. That’s why I don’t buy your claim about not hating Carcel. Not that it matters whether you like him or not because it has no bearing on anything to do with anyone else.
Honestly, from what I read, if Inez wasn’t super hot and carvel didn’t love her and we didn’t know the backstory to her, she would seem like the villain of the story to readers imo. However, we know the context so we know better.
Not to mention, this isn’t like a story where she picked him because she actually loved him. She picked the most convenient person, and just thought in her head “well, we’ll divorce so no harm no foul” when it did change his trajectory in life. All she ever heard about him was from rumors in a past life, and he actually helped her in all her lives. She had no reason to choose him. She didn’t actually love him so she wasn’t hurt by his cheating, and that’s what she wanted.
Of course, you can say that he thought she loved him so it was a scummy thing to do. However, you can see in his flashbacks and when he realizes his love that he’s always thought of her as his future wife, and did try to have a nice relationship with her. However, all he was left with was rejection and in his heart, he knew she didn’t love him, so he did anything to get her attention, even sleeping around. He knew she didn’t have feelings, but because of her manipulation and his own denial over his unrequited love, he deceived himself into believing she did. He even majorly regretted the first time he cheated, but just wanted to get some type of response from inez, other than indifference.
Honestly, at this point, idk if I would even consider it cheating, since they basically were strangers to each other before marriage. (It still is cheating technically, but no actual feelings were hurt, other than carcel’s cause he’s a little stupid booboohead lol)
I’m glad you are objective. I see the flaws of both characters. I sincerely love this story even with two such main characters because the beginning is only 1% of their story. The problem is, people get hung up on that 1% when the story is much, much more interesting than the first 1%.
Another thing is, the truth about Carcel’s character is revealed over the story and Ines is an unreliable narrator about Carcel, her brother and even about her life with the painter. The problem is readers believed everything she said. Only some began to catch on around the time of her dream where she meets Carcel in the palace garden that she’s unreliable as a narrator. Some readers think Carcel had character development. Did Carcel have character development? A big fat ‘No’. All Carcel did is do what he told Ines who would do before they married. He drew the line at marriage where they swear their vows before God. He said even if he has to live like a monk, he doesn’t intend to commit adultery. That’s why Ines got frustrated in the novel and slapped him because he was basically unknowingly declaring he will ruin her plan to get him to cheat.
One thing about Carcel’s character is that he draws very clear lines and even in his vice he acted responsibly. That’s why no one can appear before Ines and start any trouble. All the trouble that lies ahead and endangers her life originates 100% from her past lovers.
YESSSSS just the fact that carvel was so in love with her in all timelines showed that he didn’t need character development. He’s the type to completely treasure his lover and he’s just a little too stupid to realize his own feelings lol
I honestly saw so many people say no to the story just from the first part, so it’s sad that people didn’t read it. (I really only hesitated reading it cause I wasn’t in the right headspace for angst lol but this story is actually healing lol)
Also, I like to also see both of their faults. And, just like how I treat carcel, they both have pretty privilege for me so I love both of them lol—
Guys let’s just end this discussion here! Honestly, we all made good points in my opinion, and it all depends on your personal opinions about stories! Remember, this is all fictional btw!
I’m personally someone who views cheating as one of the most unforgivable things a ml can commit, so I understand your first look at carcel as the ml. I thought I was going to be like that at first too. However, after reading novel spoilers, I started to give him more leeway. There are much worse cheating mls(abandoned empress—) so the story’s portrayal isn’t actually bad lol.
I think this all stems from personal preference as well as the manhwa’s omission of important character plot points.
Anyway, I feel liked we’re all getting a bit tired at this point, so let’s not bring up this topic anymore and just all agree that everybody has flaws but eh, they’re still hot lol—
And why was he engaged? Who FORCED it on him? If Ines didn't force it on him, he would be a free single man and would ppl like you wouldn't be mad at him sleeping around. Why not ask why Ines don't break the engagement so he can be free?
Clearly you don't know the full story if you think Ines think Carcel would have STDs. She chose to marry him bc she know he didn't have STDs before even with all those rumors. She chose Carcel bc she wanted a playboy and believed the play rumors he had in the past.
I wouldn't even blame the woman if the man cheats on her bc for one thing I don't even consider it cheating when Ines wanted him to sleep around. She chose a playboy bc she needed a man who would sleep around so that when she divorce him she could blame his sleeping around to get money from him after they divorce. She been plotting to divorce him since she was 10 so why would it matter if she sleep around?
You keep saying he don't got the balls to cancel the engagement just show that you don't know jack shit. You even know why they're engaged? It's bc Ines wanted it. She told her father she wanted to marry Carcel at 6 so her father helped arranged that engagement with the empress. The whole engagement was forced on Carcel by the empress bc of Ines being behind it. Carcel and his family can't say no to that. That why Carcel even mention in the beginning of the story that they even got to marry bc Ines had always wanted it. It was bc the whole engagement and marriage could only happen bc Ines wanted it. He didn't want it but he couldn't do anything as long as Ines wanted it. She knew the empress can force Carcel to marry him bc she knew the empress don't want her to marry her son Oscar. She knew the empress still want Ines tho bc she the duke's daughter so the empress would be happy to make Ines marry Carcel, her nephew, instead so the empress can still get Ines' family connection from Carcel. Ines knew all this since she was 6 and it was mentioned in the novel.
Trying to say ppl like me when I know the story more than you. Show your stupidity when you say that Ines didn't force the engagement so who was the little girl in the beginning of the story with the empress behind her pointing her finger at Carcel and who was the little girl in the beginning of the story telling her father that she wanted to marry Carcel and who was the little girl in the beginning of the story asking the lawyer how to get a divorce. You think she'll need a divorce if she's just engaged? You can only divorce after you marry so she been plotting to marry him to divorce him. She been plotting to want a playboy to marry so that the divorce can benefit her.
Carcel been visiting her since he was young, not just when she was sick. He always been trying to visit her. She just turn away all his visits when she was starting to get sick. Clearly you forgot when he was visiting her with Oscar when they were very little.
Yeah and Ines could be a scum too for forcing Carcel to be engaged with him when she had no plan to even be a good partner to him. Relationships are two way. Man and woman got to be good to each other and care for each other for it to work so I don't see why he's the only scum when she kept turning him away while keeping him chained. Even her mother was like the only good thing she ever did was chain Carcel to her. Everyone alrdy know they're still engage bc Ines kept him engaged to her. He didn't want it and she didn't even treat him as an equal so why he got to cling to a woman who don't even want him romantically. She only want him to later marry him to later divorce him. So a woman forcing a man to be engaged with her and marry her isn't scum?
It's clear you hate Carcel. Stop lying.
I only view ppl cheating if there's feeling involve or something both agree on like if Ines had told Carcel she wanted a serious relationship or if she did love him but they both got no feelings for each other. He liked her but got annoyed at being pushed away constantly so he stopped. Woman always saying they want a guy to understand consent and understanding rejection so why is Carcel being called a scum for knowing that. Clearly Ines kept rejecting him even when she kept him tied up so he should be able to go after other ppl.
Ch0: Ines pointing at Carcel in front of the empress
Ch3: Ines telling her dad she wanted to marry Carcel, empress toasting to their engagement
Ch4: Carcel visiting Ines when very little
Ch11: Ines: "You were supposed to be the biggest playboy in the empire, the one who would help me make a clean break from my marriage in this life... You were supposed to be the one. This plan has been in the works for 17 years. It can't all just fall apart like this."
Ch24: Ines thinking about all her plan from since she was 10. Ines: "Outwardly, I am supposed to be behaving like a woman with long-held unrequited feelings for Carcel. I even acted as if I was desperate for this marriage to happen despite the fact that Carcel was opposed. I'm the woman with no pride who married a man in a heartbeat despite how short-notice his proposal was... The plan was always for me to demand that he sleep with me and him to refuse, but I'm sure that's the direction our marriage is ultimately headed in anyway. Carcel will eventually lose interest and any affection he might have for me. And just like that our marriage will end in divorce. Then finally I will be able to obtain true freedom. And with that my true death will be waiting for me... at the end of this life."
Ines at 10 talking about Katia: "She was always so kind that her reputation within the manor was excellent. Because of this, despite the fact that there was clear evidence of her having committed adultery just like her husband, she ended up receiving a more favorable verdict."
If anyone can read, they can see Ines been plotting to marry Carcel and have his kid since she was little. She even told Carcel when they were 6 that they have to have a baby.
Ch3: Ines at 6: "We'll do more than just get married. We have to have a baby together too."
Ch13: Carcel: "This engagement... has only lasted so long because... while Ines may not like me or even have any interest in me, she at least wants me."
Ines' mother to Carcel: "There is one thing Ines managed to do that I actually approved of, and that was putting a chain around your neck and making you hers... back when you were too young to know any better."
Ch17: Carcel: "Duke Valeztena had continued threatening to annul the marriage if there were any hitches at all, but he wouldn't be able to do so as long as Ines wanted to stay in the marriage."

Spoiler but I feel like everybody knows at this point:
Bro, why did Oscar cheat in the second life if he spent that much effort trying to marry mc, wtf is wrong with him
Also idk if I’ll read this cause I kinda don’t want a stress ulcer lol
