He quite litteraly says in this chapter that you've just read, before the sympathy that he felt for him began to grow into something more... , also there are a few instances prior to them showing us his past with the mc, were you could see that he wants him, I cannot be bothered to check which chapter it is precisely so I'll just let you read them again if you want to see it
