if you look at attempted murder, the sentence should be life imprisonment, not the death penalty. Furthermore, what she did was defamation and harrassment, not exactly attempted murder because she hasnt physically gone and threatened her life with a weapon or assaulted her. Defamation can be jailtime or fine, but definitely not death. It is only attempted murder IF Chloe did go to the forest full of monsters and got hurt. But she didnt. It is only attemoted murder if she hired a hitman as a weapon to harm with intent to kill. Therefore, I would agree that the sentence is archaic and she cant help the society, but her just lowkey thinking its ok it just feels like nobility snobbery to kill someone that doesnt like you just because you are a duchess.

IF Chloe didn't meet the knights she would have DEFINITELY gone and someone would have been hurt or dead.
hmm i think I can see your point however because I'm placing myself in Chloe shoes and thinking I could have die IF I didn't meet the knights ofcourse I would get rid of her. She knew about the frogs that can kill people which is why she recommended that place to Chloe other maids. She had the INTENT to kill/harm someone. She's someone sick in the head everything she did is because she had suffered from an inferior complex. Honestly speaking i do believe she deserves to die. I think it was a just punishment if in this time period they dont have the type of help a person sick in the head like her needed. Plus you have to remember that in this period there is a class hierarchy to follow and she committed a grave sin to someone ABOVE her status.
Honestly speaking had she stick to the minor harass I would have totally agreed that the punishment was excessive; HOWEVER, when she planned to physically cause harm to Chloe or one of the maid just to make Chloe's REPUTATION suffer.... Hmm nope that's out of line and she got what she deserve.
Also all our arguments are based on IF so i personally don't think anyone is right or wrong. I just wanted to share how I felt too.

lol just because someone came from the modern age doesn't mean they can't adapt to punishing criminals that want people dead the way they do in that time period. If someone wanted me to die and they try to trick me into getting myself killed they would be punished however the law is there and I would be fine with it. It depends on the crime and how severe it is. She definitely got what she deserved imo ┑( ̄Д ̄)┍

Honestly, if I put myself in Chloe’s shoes, I won’t mind that maid getting such punishment at all....
And if I want to compare this situation.....
Imagine, a young adult girl went to a countryside to receive his inheritance from his only one last relative, maybe a house where his grandpa has lived on before he passed away. The girl inherited everything in the house, including all the money and the servants/staffs who work there. The girl don’t know anything about that countryside areas. Suddenly a senior servant recommended a certain place for her to visit, the servant said that place is very beautiful and serene, bla-bla-bla...
Hearing this, the girl decided to went there to take a look.
But, unknown to her, that recommended place actually a deserted place with scattered landmines. Because this is countryside, people around there has been living there for long time and everyone already know that place is dangerous.
When the girl almost entering that place, a farmer who were close-by at that time saw her and immediately stopped her. Farmer told her the truth of that place and how the girl would have been in grave danger if she was not stopped on time.
In this situation, our modern world would definitely not gonna punish that lying servant much.... no one is hurt, no evidence that servant has said those things, no witness of the conversation except the testimony from this girl(victim).
But both the girl and the servant know for sure this incident could DEFINITELY have killed her.
But because of modern world, that girl can’t do much to punish the servant.
But if I was that girl, I will get my other subordinates to capture this servant and take them to that landmines place in the midnight. Gonna tie both hand to the back, and gag the mouth so this Insolent servant won’t make a noise.
Order my subordinates to use those big garden scissors to threaten That servant to walk into the landmines area.
.....
Yeah, my motto is, “eyes for an eyes”, “to kill an evil, I shall be more of an evil”, and “I won’t go down alone”.

Do you really think that the maid would have stopped at even attempted murder, and even in modern day times if police find proof of attempted murder the sentence isn't light, sure it's not the death penalty but we are modern folks now, the time she is in isn't, and while i didn't expect death basically in those times slaves/commoners etc were no better than animals to the nobility and in all honesty....hanging was too good for that betch they should have led her smothered in meat out to the beast forest.

Its not about the sentence she got. Its about the message that the common people are animals to nobility even to a modern woman. Are we really okay with such a message. I wouldnt have minded if Chloe showed a bit of sorry because that is how 21st century humans react to archaic punishment. Heck, it would fit great if Chloe was just a normal, non transmigrated duchess. Eg. I watch those court intrigue and dont bat an eye because those were the times. But no, her silence as a 21st century chick just speaks volume that class and status matters to an archaic, unhealthy degree. Even till now, the Thai monarchy abuses lese majeste laws, jailing and punishing anyone that disagrees... or simply dont like. I think mentalities like this is why the geneva convention exist.
The problem with alot of isekai into nobility is the snobbery, elitism and the fantasy of excess that comes with it, but they are manifested in the MC and Male lead and thus disguised as acceptable. It taps into the provider fantasy akin to that of a hostess getting her guest to order the most expensive alcohol or a sugar baby getting her daddy to buy her a luxury brand item or pay for her college in exchange for affection as a product.
"But effa", you would say, "She turned down the Duke when he gave her the jewel set! Thats totally 21st century. Thats totally not like other materialistic shallow plastic surgery girls!"
And that my dear, is exactly the problem. Did it really change anything? What change does it make if she refused one set of jewels when the Duke already provides every lavish thing for her? Im very sure every dress and jewels she wore did not magically materialise out for her. You know what changed? An illusion. With that one insignificant scene, author sets up an us vs them dynamic, assuming that in that scenario, every other woman on the planet is just a shallow materialistic bimbo while Chloe is deserving of all that stuff that... is already given to her. It paints an illusion that by being quirky, you deserve more stuff with minimal effort than the average or struggling person on the streets, making ends meet.
The problem of nobility isekai is it allows you enjoy the romance of excess and opulence without thinking about the morality of it. Not just that, the illusion of being a beacon of morality while doing some questionable opulent crap. I coin the term, Innocent Golddigging. You want the things that any other girl on earth wants, but you also want to look innocent, have the moral high ground and deserving of it while wanting it with minimal effort. So the author adds the Us vs Them mechanics into the midst. With the Them being an imaginary group of shallow bitches in contrast with the minimal effort MC that gets all the public points because she acts like herself and thus is quirky in isekai world. And the more undeservingly normal she is, the more relatable and interesting she is to the average reader. Because she gives us that hope that we can be of some importance just by doing... what we normally do in our day to day lives. We cant end world hunger, we cant end wars, we cant solve the public infrastructure plaguing the city or even the laws for the matter, the max we can do is doing something we can like introducing a tea drinking hobby to impress the nobility or cook for them and fingers crossed they fall in love with you and give you a lavish life. Its highly unlikely that will occur even if Isekai is real and most monarchies are gone cos... inefficiency and hubris. Interesting how Marilyn Monroe deconstructed this pretense in Gentlemen prefers Blondes

I think isekai and time travel genre is really bringing this Notlikeothergirls fever out in little teen girls

Long story short, just admit that we all want a sugar daddy. Bye.

Suggesting someone to go to a mountain isnt exactly murder... I could suggest you jump off a cliff. Heck, attempted murder isnt just the to kill/harm someone, you have to directly pull through with the plan and actually cause bodily harm, not just suggest and wish it happened. Its like telling you to jaywalk and hoping you die because of it one day because there is a chance of harm. What she did was lying and defamation. Sure that deserve jail time but not death. It is only attempted murder if Chloe gets hurt in the mountain, then that proves the chance of harm to life. For example, the police cannot immediately arrest someone that threatens you if there is no proof of harm done. In fact, even when you are defending yourself from an attacker, there is a limit to how much you can defend.
https://criminal.findlaw.com/criminal-law-basics/self-defense-overview.html
And there is little to none done on the current chloe who had everything thwarted. And thus this retaliation is totally not just. So the only reason why the maid died... is because the nobility abused their status. We just have to thank that you are not in law enforcement or legislation jobs.
Its not about the sentence she got. Its about the message that the common people are animals to nobility even to a modern woman. And you kinda proven my insight that such works just make the bulk of the fans... insensitive and elitist to the commoners. I would have no qualms if she was just an ordinary duchess and thus your "It was that time" argument can work. But she is from the 21st century and she didnt even seem bothered that someone got tortured and squashed like an ant despite only attempted defamation.
So, no she didnt deserve it and Chloe should have felt at least some form of revulsion to her fate.

She said that the maid did too much and even listed the crimes so it was the reason why she didn't feel sorry. Chloe like us focuses heavily on the fact that she tried to have her killed. So YES I'm okay with trash being taken out. I don't care about the class the only thing I care about is the fact that she tried to GRAVELY INJURE/KILL SOMEONE because of a stupid inferiority complex. Why oh why would I not have a problem with her being treated like trash? She knew the area is dangerous she didn't warn them about the dangers, it is intent. I highly doubt they had a system in place for someone with mental issues. She would not have stopped had she not been killed. If someone is coming after my life there's no way in hell i would be feeling any remorse or pity towards them. It's either her or me and I choose me. I don't know what type of life you're living honestly from the way you are talking I'm assuming you live a very peaceful and somewhat easy life so you can have whatever you wanna call it morality, value for human life etc but where I'm from that "kindness/morality" will get you killed. It's not a game out here and my environment has made me think the way I think. If someone comes after your life it's either them or you. There's no law just a fight for survival and what she did is what we call a set up which is cowardly and very frowned upon here. So her getting hanged is light and it's minor and honestly peaceful compared to what would have happened to her here in the 21st century. In the 21st century where I'm from her entire family would have been torture in front of her before they were all slaughtered like pigs so forgive me for standing by what I say. It doesn't matter what Era you're in, in a dog eat dog environment you do what you have to to survive and that's my reality.
Also addressing your comment for the other person she wasn't a commoner she was also a noble woman on the same level as Chloe before Chloe married the Duke.

So because we come from a harsh environment or because we value our life we are immature or 13? I would love to live such a privilege life where safety is more or less guaranteed. Where you can accept or feel pity towards someone who is constantly coming after you or your life. I just don't have it in me to sympathize with a criminal especially not a criminal who came after my life. At the end of the day she is A CRIMINAL who committed a crime, she's not the victim here. She made her choice and she knew what the consequences would be. She could have stopped from her first 2 or 3 attempts failed but she kept going.
Can you please answer my questions I'm about to ask i really want to understand you?
If it were you why would you feel sympathy for someone who has constantly tried to harm you while all you were doing is staying in your own lane? You weren't harsh to the person, you weren't bullying the person nor did you ever have any malicious intent towards the person... You were simply trying to adapt to the new environment you were placed in. You are simply trying to better yourself but someone keeps coming after you. Forget all the petty crimes they actually wanted you dead and tried to have you harm or killed. How can you feel sorry for someone like that when you never did anything to the person or provoked the person in anyway possible?
My environment prevents me from being "a mature adult" so please shed some light since you are a mature adult.

Cuz that's how I was raised. That's the culture I was taught. That even if someone has such malicious intent, I do not have the right to take their lives....even if it's beyond me, I can't simply ignore when a person is hanged when their crimes don't even need that punishment.
Ofc I am no mother Theresa...I feel angry,I want them to suffer....but taking their life? For something like this? That is uncivilised.

You think you are the only one with sufferings? That itself makes you ignorant and narrow minded.
I rather not disclose anything I have been through. Because it's not worth it. But guess what? Just cuz some "planned" to kill me, someone bullied me(when I couldn't take a stand), or someone caused me defamation....how do I call myself human if I gave them death penalty and was content with it that I decided to celebrate it with my lover?

She was not celebrating with her lover she was attending to documents and it's not her that decided the death penalty. Someone was blabbling about the law this and that when it was THE LAW AND THE FIGURES OF AUTHORITY that decided her punishment. I never asked you to disclose your personal experiences I threw a jab back at your jab. You assumed we were immature and 13 years old because of our views based on the environment we were raised in so how can you call me ignorant or get offended when i clapped back to your ignorance or narrow mindedness? Also I genuinely asked you about your views in a comment afterwards because I wanted to know why you think the way you think so that doesn't make me narrow-minded when I'm trying to understand you. I said it before no one is right and no one is wrong. The environment that we are raised in helps shapes us to who we are which is why i wouldn't even bat an eye at someone like her. She crossed a line she shouldn't have and the authorities decided that she should die where I'm from no one would have waited for the authorities or the law that's my reality. I personally would be okay with it the same way how Chloe was okay with it.
Aside from the kiss....
She was hanged for defamation?? This place is uncivilised we get it....but girl you are a modern day lady....you just accepted that? I wanna barf
