Plotting to punish the emperor/empire and her family is more interesting than pretending an unhealthy relationship is anything but an unhealthy relationship. I like this but I'm still allowed to critique it.
Anybody else don't ship her and the ml? Like, I love evil MCs because it is a small, untapped market (and it's normally exclusive to male MCs), and I would like this a lot more if this was a MC that had desires that was totally selfish, using and manipulating everyone with only regards to her revenge... but I am a little unnerved by the assumption that we have to like them romantically in the future?? Am I really willing to ship a manipulator and a victim of manipulation - who has become so dependent on his exploiter to the point of tyrannical obsession - and then pretend like it's some feel good uwu romance???
After I thought about it long and hard, if they swapped genders, it would've been easy for me to call this abuse. Whether she's intentionally doing so or not, she's definitely giving him trauma, and is planning to do something that will give him even more trauma. She's toxic for him. I hope she goes through some kind of rehabilitation and redeems herself to him. I don't want him to blindly accept her back, even though I already know that he'd be desperately searching for her.
Also, taking into account her own abuse and trauma - how cold and ignorant to love she became and further warping into someone who is calculative and distant - is a reason for why she is the way she is, but it is never an excuse to abuse/hurt others.
Tbh, I was more interested in the parts with her vs her familyヾ(☆▽☆). I wanted to see them shiver at her indifference and scramble for her attention, realize their wrongs and see how much accomplishments, talents, skills, smarts that could have been proudly reflected onto her family if they only loved her. They could've puffed out their chest when she became grandmaster instead of sweating nervously. Then, I'd want to see them be completely destroyed when her full revenge is laid out, when they see the monster They created.
I agree with you that she would have to redeem herself for it to become a feel good romance, but I also don't think this is supposed to be a feel good romance, I think it's supposed to be fucked up and toxic, and that's what's interesting about it. Sometimes relationships don't have to be good to be interesting and worth reading, sometimes is entertaining to read about fucked up people doing awful things.

I do believe that she had some part to play by preying on a moment of his weakness (mother's death), and raised him from originally a puppeteer who indirectly, coldly and rationally schemed, to an irrational and dependent puppy-monster-yandere. So even though she didn't needlessly kill people, she still fxxked him up. She doesn't really care for his feelings for her, as long as his obsession with her gets him to do what she says. BUt he's a fxxked up person too ngl

He goes against her control and does something to thwart a small portion of her revenge (he didn't leave the emperor alive for her to kill, she would've hated him if he killed the emperor himself, so he turned the emperor into a sword) because he didn't want her to lose the will to live after accomplishing her goal. She realised she overestimated her control over him, but since she in the grand scheme of things accomplished her revenge, she just runs away and leaves him.

The fact that he turned his father into a sword makes me think that maybe my crack theory that he was the one who came up with the "turning someone into a sword" plan on the first timeline as well was more real than I though
