He cannot take another step further in hus life until he can logically reconcile with another reason/logic that can dismiss his earlier logic of understanding.
Normal people emotionally adjust with different circumstances of life but that's not how our mc (or cases like him) relate to the world.
I don't use the words beliefs or values, because these thought patterns are not motivated by love. The underlying foundation is an insurmountable logic of the rules & patterns of the world.
