I don't see the male gaze like girls are drawn very cutely but so are man and if you talk about "loli bait" bc girl is short and guy is tall so they basically have a distance relationship. First off you have a male lead who suffers from trauma for being scary and intimidating so his love interest is someone who loves him for himself (his life is centered around women who find him TERRIFYING kinda similar to how reality works right? Women are scared of men and this brings hate towards men which men feel victimized by the fear they brought upon themselves: sexual assault, rape, harassment, etc. that men have done in the past and still are doing now)

im definitely not saying rintaro is one of them but because he is a representative of how men feel towards women who feel fear when it comes to men

he's the kind of character that get obsessive no matter if he is brainwashed/manipulated. I read the novel a while ago so im not really sure but to me he never really respected Penelope. He was okay at first. He could had been the end game but he blew it by bring Yonnve back. That hurted Pene and made her think that she could no longer trust him. His affection got higher and higher which made him become obsessed with her when she abandoned him. Yonnve did manipulate him but he also thought abt bring Yonnve back so that Pene would get kick out and leave with him. So even if he is brainwashed, he still would do the same even if he wasnt. Personally, I hate his guts. like leave pene alone, she's starting to find happiness.
