Mangago has always been like this, at least it has been for the last 10 years.
The problem is that the notifications don't tell you what has been updated. You get a notification if anything is updated for a manga not just for a new chapter upload. So if the uploader decides to change the cover image, uploads a raw chapter, fixes an older chapter or even does a small metadata correction you get an update and it's up to you to figure out if you are interested in what has been updated. Usually people are not interested if not a new chapter or raw.
I think what happens for most of the fake updates is either an uploader uploads a chapter and something has gone wrong and they have had to fix and reupload the chapter. Or because the site is run off of multiple servers that there is a lag between when some of the servers have been updated. I have observed that you can have a notification and see no chapter and others are able to read the chapter or vice versea where there are people in the comments complaining about a fake update and I'm able to see and read an update. Usually if you check again an hour or two later the chapter is there fine.
It's annoying but unfortunately it seems to be an inbuilt design feature of the database and servers setup.
Not sure if you have noticed the scourge of poor quality uploads where there are parts missing and out of order. The last chapter was one of these uploads and was uploaded the day the usual group uploads but was uploaded by someone random. We then get a notification because a chapter has been updated when the chapter gets replaced.
Currently mangago has a plague of randoms who want all the praise and glory of a scanlation team/uploader doesn't want to put in the work. Also conversely a plague of randoms complaining about minor mistakes or demanding faster releases.
But they just updated?
