From what I read so far in the novel he’s not 2nd male lead or an old lover however they were expecting to marry each other. They were friendly to eachother but they didn’t share any longing glances or anything like that (at least in novel) . Berta and him don’t say anything about it but her sister says something like how she thought she would be able to marry the same man as Berta so they could always be together. Berta finds it awkward for obvious reasons but it didn’t seem like King paid much mind to it

First of all, all those years of emotional neglect. waiting for him for a talk and saying sorry might have been a better move than just showing up and being all touchy and then fucking trying to control his life to be a "good mother" without even asking if he wanted that change. I might be projecting onto this bc of mommy issues but she's awful.
Also she isn't sorry because she actually loves her son, she just wasn't ready for the consequences of her actions and how that affected HER and not how it affected HIM all his life.
