And eating the heartwood of a Birch tree can't be eaten! Only the inner bark (cambium) is edible. We humans can't digest wood IRL. The only edible tree is the Yacaratiá tree's wood, but needs to be prepared properly for consumption.

I think he doesn’t since he never had a mate. Penguins usually only mate with their partner during the window they are fertile (I assume once a year before the females leave to feed and the dads stay with the egg)
