From memory (I read about 70 out of the now 700+ chapters ages ago), he doesn't have strong feelings for anyone other than his master, he just keeps helping/impressing various girls along the way, who all end up enamoured to varying degrees. At that stage, it wasn't the worst harem, but I still didn't like that aspect.

Yeah, same! I like a good surrounded-by-loyal-or-affectionate-companions/entourage type of MC every now and then, but anything more always feels inane, pointless and annoying.
Female protag stories. Pretty sure that's the only way to get isekai stories that aren't harem. Though, I guess it still runs the risk of reverse-harem. And annoying shoujo drama. But it seems much more common in female protag for the romance to be kept on a one-on-one level.

well, he's used to that kind of touching but the kind that the mc did was without sexual intention. it's likely from his perspective he felt that it was the caring kind. kinda like a caring parent or sibling you know? considering his flashbacks, it's likely he didn't experience proper familial love and care and only experienced shallow sexual relations ╮(￣▽￣)╭
