and in there it was "explained" that he "hated" her because he didn't hate her but couldn't deal with his feelings for her and was jealous of her cousin who she seemed to have a good relationship with. And he was mad that originally lovestruck mc treated him nicely but after he had a fit of jealousy in childhood and acted like a bitch towards her for years and so when in adulthood she treated him in that mature not lovestruck way he made a surprise pikachu face AFTER MISTREATING HER FOR YEARS. And threw another hissy fit.
Their relationship is so fffnnn dumb in so many ways. The art is gorgeous, but the story is a trainwreck. Absolutely atrocious but pulls you in.

In the beginning i though he treated her „special“ when he did all the crazy stuff for her but he was like that with his other gfs too…So if the ex gf wouldnt have minded him being obsessed he wouldve stayed with her…
Hmm, in my opinion though, although what you said might be true, in a world where Hotaru didn't lend him her umbrella, he might still not end up in a long lasting relationship with his gfs (even if that person wouldn't mind staying with him) but idk, in the chapter where we met his ex who splashed water on him, she told Hotaru how Hananoi can be extreme (installing location sharing apps, questioning about her male friends, even taking pictures for evidences to question later) However, Hananoi has never shown this kind of extremity to Hotaru (or rather he supressed it bc he loves her so much) I imagine if it were another girl other than Hotaru, his obsession for her would definitely turn into extreme paranoia which would exhaust the both of them (thus, leading to eventual break up no matter how much the person is willing to tolerate him) though with Hotaru, he kept his obsession in moderation bc he doesn't want to scare her away and lose her.
This is probably because Hotaru is the first girl he genuinely love before becoming twisted? And plus with the guilt of not being able to save her, there's no way he would want her to hate him. This differ with his other gfs who he straight up show his true nature right from the start bc he just doesn't care about their feelings and instead, want them to make him their number 1 despite how twisted he was. I think if Hotaru doesn't exist, it takes an equally twisted girl to make Hananoi succumb to love, but even then, their love wouldn't be healthy. ╮(￣▽￣)╭

hananoi’s perception of love was skewed because he never really received it. he went through all the obsessive actions in order to get that affection he thought was love. being with hotaru becomes deeper since she doesn’t come to him with preconceived notions and he has to learn to be his own person/ communicate his issues in a healthy way with her. he’s able to do that because hotaru pushes past his people pleasing exterior, and is really the first girlfriend to understand him on a deeper level
