10/10 reread this after a few years and did not fail to make me cry hard again.
Wasn’t gonna cmmt but I feel like I have to since this webtoon is SO undeservingly underrated & more ppl should know abt it;
The whole webtoon comprises of only 22 episodes but it is easily one of my most favourite creative works that had greatly influenced my general perspective and outlook on “life”.
Every chapter is so well done and unique- it positions you to really contemplate the consequential impacts following the actions and choices you are making in life. raw and human. After Death acts as a light reminder of everyone’s inevitable death whether a person is deemed “good” or “bad”.
- “You think that death is nowhere close in your future, so you tend to care less about it” “But just being aware of it can change things” -
I’m a fat sucker for words and especially love the dialogues in After Death- the authors are geniuses in art direction where they structure each episode so well the stories become so life-like and every encounter with the characters forced me to become emotionally attached to their life story despite the shortness of it all. It is just so well executed. I can’t say it enough, it’s so difficult to find manhwas/mangas/work etc that can express something so meaningful in just a few picture panels and words. I could say more but honestly just read it yourself and you’ll understand.
**HIGHLY recommend to read this on WEBTOON instead since most chapters are accompanied with beautiful music that amosphercially contemplates each story. It makes a huge difference. The cmmts by other readers will also provide more depth and understanding to the episodes. Also simply reading and liking the chapters on WEBTOON will support the author. please.
If you’re still thinking of whether to read this, do yourself a favour and JUST DO IT- it’s rather short anyways and a great experience. I wish I could reread it again with a fresh mind.
seeing aki as a kid blindly just having fun in what would probably be his last moments is so depressing.
he’s manipulated to do what he despises most: the killing of innocents. it morally goes against his very being and instead of hunting down the gun devil to avenge his loved ones, he ends up becoming the very thing he fears most. it was through power and denji that he finally found a reason to live, even going as far as deciding to give up the mission that would’ve brought him closer to defeating the gun devil- all to protect p + d. i don’t think ppl grasp how serious this is- aki would willingly sacrifice himself and give up his LIFE PURPOSE, his life-long gd obsession, just to ensure p+d are safe. i honestly believe he’s one of the most unfortunate characters in this series. even his feelings for makami are fabricated.
it’s inevitable that his death is creeping soon, and the fact that his blood would most likely be spewed in the hands of denji makes my heart ache
