Long story short, the British empire forced Asian countries to consume opium (a heavy drug) and that nearly destroyed their civilisation in one generation. It’s left asian countries « traumatized » and a lot of them have extremely heavy sentences for drug dealing and drug use (long jail times and often death sentence). Not justifying this huge taboo just explaining why there’s one.
