okay. okay, this is my last straw - im dropping this manga for real. and because im so pissed about how the plot went from so intriguing to trash, im going to rant about it.
the manga really had so much potential. i mean i don't know exactly what drew me to it - it certainly wasn't unique. there were examples of obvious character molds (i.e yuu as the 'stupid but headstrong and loyal protagonist that's somehow op as hell') that have been used in so many other mangas and the concept of vampires and demons isn't exactly new. but ons somehow combined these cliches to create a good, classic action fantasy plot, and i really appreciated that.
the beginning did pretty well in attracting my interest. well, i'll attribute this interest from the fact that mika and yuu were separated, which of course really got me wondering how they would meet, what they would do if they met, and so on. i didn't think i'd be a fan of the supporting characters, but somehow as i kept reading they grew on me, which isn't something a lot of mangas can accomplish. in fact, i even thought guren was pretty cool. yes, i somehow liked that douchebag, back when i didn't know how much of a piece of shit he would be. guren sort of gave me vibes of 'protagonist later on in life having to share the spot with a newer protagonist' because he seemed like he was op as hell too but hiding it, and i thought that was rather novel. i'm not going to lie, i also loved the guren and yuu dynamic.
when yuu and mika finally 'met', i was pretty worried. all that drama and tension from keeping them apart would dissipate, which meant the author would have to think of something else to replace that dynamic, and sometimes that doesn't work well. i was especially concerned because they met so early, and i thought the manga would go to shit.
thankfully, it didn't. well, i think this was mostly in part to the fact they were separated once again, but their reunion was unique and allowed for the plot to progress in a good direction. again, the manga resumed and i happily waited for each chapter. the new characters of guren's squad were introduced and caught my attention (esp shinya) and so i decided to read the light novel centered around guren to pass the time.
that was the first sign things were going downhill. i'm sorry. that light novel was absolute crap. maybe not to some, but i definitely got sword art online vibes from it. why?
because holy fucking shit, guren was op op op op op op. and it was fucking annoying. and so was mahiru. i literally liked everyone except those two, but somehow, the novel is 90% about just them. guren is from some trash branch but apparently stronger than god, and he has to 'hide' his abilities to not attract the attention of hiragi house... even fucking though his whole purpose of getting strong was due to this singular incident where he becomes friends with mahiru and was beaten up for daring to be near her. his act is dumb but what makes it worse is that he has no capability for acting like he's not strong. shinya sees through his bullshit in one day, and so do countless others.
and guren as a child was a complete asshole. i reallly don't understand how shinya and the others became 'family' and loyal to him. his love with mahiru seems weird as fuck too - like they love each other but they're also mortal enemies that fight each other for some reason but then they sleep together and i dont even know at this point. i feel like the author tried too hard to make it 'mysterious' and 'all of this will be connected at the end' like but instead it just turned me off and i wanted to stop reading. and i did. i forgot where exactly i stopped reading but i just knew i couldn't take this bullshit plot and the sheer arrogance and douchbagness of reading from guren's point of view.
the only saving grace was again, the side characters. actually, that one extra where shinya was sold to participate in a killing tournament where the winner would become mahiru's finance broke me, and i couldn't help thinking that a light novel on shinya would have been so much more interesting than guren. he became my fav character after that.
okay, so basically after i rage quit on the light novel, the manga still remained fun and interesting. it wasn't until after that huge battle where guren betrayed everyone, released the seraph, yuu became.... whatever he did ( i don't even remember or care at this point ) and escaped that this manga slowed went downhill.
the plot became so fucking convoluted and confusing that i don't even know whats going on. the author adds new and useless characters, and in a place where the story makes no sense, the author adds some stupid misplaced humor to cover it up. mika is shunted off to have less screen time then shinoa and don't get me wrong. i'm indifferent between the two, and don't care who gets with yuu or not. but damn, at least the manga was moving in an interesting direction when the focus was on the mikayuu 'bromance'.
other than the main three (guren, shinoa, and yuu) the rest of the characters are basically used as cannon fodder. guren's squad, who are trained soldiers and quite intelligent, easily forgive him and trust him even tho, news flash, he nearly got them all killed. guren's reasoning for betraying them was shit too, even to me, who more or less understands the big picture. ferid, who was an interesting antagonist used to have clever schemes, but now i feel he's just randomly doing fuck knows what.
and maybe im just dumb, but i dont understand a single thing about these angels and seraphs and whatever. the author has this habit of introducing some new thing and just never explaining until like twenty chapters have passed, and that's when i have trouble remembering which character is which, let alone some minor confusing detail. yuu actually existing in 200 ad, or the deal behind his black demon, or whatever. i don't get it.... and this point i dont care enough to.
i'm just.... done. and upset that i wasted so much time liking this manga only for it decline so much. y'all are free to like it or whatever, but i think im done reading ons for the rest of my life. (i'm probably still going to watch the anime tho but only to see shinya animated cause HOT DAMN im weak for silver hair characters)

the legend that jumped out with this actress... she's wasted on filming someone get this woman a degree on psychology lmao
okay but love how she hits the nail on the head with the problem with jowoon tho. i don't think he's a genuine bad guy (mostly... lol) but his overconfidence, arrogance, and general selfishness that probably came from being raised as a spoiled rich brat is what's ruining his relationship with haesoo and with other people in general. inherently, he wants the benefits that come with being in a relationship with haesoo (like sex obviously but also in some part i think he subconsciously craves the genuine affection and attachment haesoo had for him when they were younger) but he doesn't want to invest his own personal emotions into the relationship either, which probably explains him pushing haesoo away and acting like an asshole but also his possessiveness and not wanting haesoo to sleep with other people

Completely agree.
He wants Haesoo as his possession, and wants to keep him close, but is completely unwilling to invest in a proper relationship. He doesn’t consider Haesoo’s feelings, and sees it as “only natural” for Haesoo to be his... except this is only gonna harm Haesoo in the long term. It’s not a healthy relationship, to say the least.
dokyung is my beautiful baby boy... the next person who bullies him... I’m going to break your legs
