Ellen really can't catch a break. Her dad emotionally neglected her and Izek when they were younger. She didn't get to see Izek often because he was getting heir training. Her mother abused her and then killed herself because she was super mentally ill. She nearly got married off to one of Ruby's shitty brothers and shipped away from her home. Her nanny got kicked out of the mansion for being shitty to Ruby. And now she has to find out that her oldest and dearest friend is a snake and has been plotting on her and Izek for years so she can use their family to start a coup and become queen.
It's amazing that she hasn't snapped yet. If this were a different webcomic, she would be the protagonist that dies tragically and then goes back in time to get a second chance at a happy life.
Tbf, she can escape the marrige that she doesnt want to because her brother sacrified himself by marry Ruby instead so she doesn't have to go anywhere.
And if she's welcome Ruby with open mind and no bias in the first place (or just slowly open up to her), she would have notice how her nanny and her derest friend treating her in-law like shit and once she know the truth she should have act like the noble lady and punish her own maid by herself, not act like some weak girl who needs her brother to handle things for her.
i can feel sorry for her just because of her mother's condition and only the way her dearest friend is using her all thie time but other than that, Ruby is more pitiful than her in many ways and deserves some good in-law who will not spills her mentally ill condition to anyone.
A lot of the problems in this story seem to happen because the characters look at "Person Obviously Up to No Good" and then just literally don't do anything about it until literally the last possible moment, if at all. Like Duke Ergi, this man no one can account for and who no one seems to know anything about, has been given free rein to roam around the castle completely unsupervised and has been whispering stuff in Rashta's ear for months and just nobody says or does anything about it? Rashta starts slowly losing her mind and Sovieshu just kinda sits back and lets her run amok around the castle despite being aware of most of the stuff she's doing? Viscount Lotteshu keeps showing up to the castle for undisclosed reasons and speaking to Rashta for other undisclosed reasons and has a baby that looks just like her living in his house and no one looks into it? Krista's family clearly wants revenge for Heinrey driving her to her death and they just kinda ignore it until they straight up try to kill Navier? Why are none of the characters in this story proactive? All of their actions are reactive and they only react when things get so unbelievably bad that they can't possibly ignore them anymore instead of nipping things in the bud before they become problems.

I just want to point out, since everyone including the author has forgotten, that slavery is still 100% legal and we've just never brought it up again. Lebetti's family kept slaves in horrific conditions, which is how this whole story began, and she's just hanging out with Navier and everyone else like it's no big deal. That's an insane thing to include in your story if not a single character is ever going to acknowledge slavery as a bad thing.
There's a very navier centred morality operating here. Anything she and cronies do is considered okay. I like the story but honestly there's an underlying eliticism about the story as well. I just don't think too deeply about it. I'm thinking of not engaging with the updates anymore because it's all gotten so boring since rashta died
Literally I remember hating rashta when I first read this in like middle school. Now looking back while she still isn’t a good person Navier is lowk trash too wdym you’re supposed to be the good guy with the moral high ground but you are chill with slavery and buddy buddy with literal abusers. It would be fine if this was written as Navier having character depth but it’s clearly not meant to be that way.
