I'm over this. Mao is obviously the good guy and deserves way better than Kamiko who is no hero and doesn't deserve to be a same and DEFINITELY doesn't deserve Mao.

Lol, if Kamiko didn't deserve Mao, he would allow his brother and the other filthy corrupted hypocrites from the hero's side to use Mao for their own ambitions. But dialogues with Kaname show he's fending them off on top of helping Mao keep up the charade with the demon king's side so that he can continue to be free living the way he wants, which is NOT as a demon king... That's 'good vs evil' deconstruction for you: it's to show how it's impossible for anyone to ALWAYS be good or always be bad, showing how in the end their holier-than-thou attitude ended up corrupting the hero's side from the inside, while the demon king's lackeys are not so bad.

your comment deserves a slow clap! well explained!!! Q w Q <3

I'm surprised how insightful that was for a thread on a yaoi fanatic's manga website LOOL

Interesting theory, but I remain unconvinced.
Even if Kamiko's motives truly revolved around protecting Mao (which I don't really buy), there is no reason for him to be overtly cruel.
Yet even when they are completely alone Kamiko torments Mao as if it's a sport.
If he genuinely cared about Mao, there is simply no way he would behave the way he does.
Kamiko is a loser and Mao could do better.

Well, perhaps what youre missing here is a cultural aspect on how much of an issue Mao's skirting of his "responsibilities" as demon king really is... In an Asian culture that believes so strongly in filial piety and familial obligations not doing what your family expects you to do is considered the epitome of "selfishness" and ungratefulness, especially when you're the only heir and the livelihood of many other people who have served your family for generations depends on the continuation of the family business. In this story, Mao's duties as demon king are the story's equivalent to filial piety, taken to a "supernatural" level: he is the sole heir of the family's "demon king" family "business"... Kamiko, in contrast, fulfills the role expected by his family down to a 't, and Mao's denial of who he is means currently that Kamiko's being forced to fulfill his role twice as hard for the both of them, particularly so in order for the two of them to be able to live together peacefully like they're right now doing, for the reasons we've already explained (Kamiko fending off the hero side's greedy bunch and the demon king side's over-enthusiastic followers).
Living in permanent denial of who they are is not a luxury that both of them can fully indulge in at the same time so Kamiko "torments" Mao mostly as a payback for having to work twice as hard as a result of Mao's "selfishness".

Yeah something about this manga rubs me the wrong way. S type seme isn't my thing, but I don't mind it when it's done well and there are plenty of yaoi I really like where it is. But with these two I just don’t feel the love. There relationship seems so shallow. It’s ten chapters in and they aren't really dating despite having lots of sex, nor have they made any serious declarations of love. I was hoping it'd be made clear early on that Kamiko was really in love with Mao not justing wanting to subjugate him because he's supposed to as the Hero. And well I feel that still hasn't been made clear and I'm not convinced the latter isn't his primary motive for being with Mao.

Not sure if you're being condescending on purpose, but having a difference of opinion doesn't mean you have to talk down to me.
And I don't think it's a matter of culture, unless treating someone you theoretically care about like garbage even when your alone is part of how people in Japan show affection. Somehow I highly doubt that. It has been my experience that when you love someone you refrain from degrading and demeaning them. I also find most people communicate openly and honestly with people they like, none of which Kamiko has done. He treats Mao like garbage, which is why I find their relationship, such as it is, very unrealistic and generally a bad example. When I write that Mao deserves better it is because I think everyone deserves to be treated with respect by the person they are with; however, I don't think that's a product of my culture. I believe it's part of being a good human being.

Condescending? Er... you do realize that a lot of the people who write comments in this website are not native English speakers, right?

In an ideal world, absolutely...

The third one: when two people don't speak the same first language some things get lost in translation... I wasn't trying to sound condescending. It was the opposite.
I actually get annoyed myself at Kamiko and sometimes pity Mao, but I think this is the story's way of hinting at character development: by showing how Mao needs to grow a backbone, stop with the escapism and the denial and make up his own mind about his relationship with Kamiko on the one hand and his demon king "destiny" on the other. I can relate a lot with Mao's indecisiveness, that's why I think he isn't an innocent victim: he's consenting and also using Kamiko to suit his own purposes. So I rather think they kind of deserve each other.

I'm probably the only one, but I want Tsubaki to end up with Masayoshi.
Sakura's too aggressive and Tadayoshi's kind of an ass.
I think Masayoshi would treat him best and love him most, plus he's really hot (maybe not as hot as Sakura, but definitely hotter than his little brother).
But more than anything I want an update!!!

Same I agree

I'm probably going to get in trouble for saying this, but I hope Hollywood makes a movie out of this. I read an article and saw some of the publicity photos for the Japanese movie version of this manga and it looked like it was going to be simply awful. The filmmakers ignored the background on the characters and cast them all as Japanese, instead of just Mikasa. Then they changed the entire setting so it would be more affordable to film. Even the costumes they used looked cheap and cheesy.
Someone like Spielberg should decide this story needs to be brought to the big screen so it gets turned into a totally righteous movie or series of movies with kick butt special effects.

OH GOD the live action was no.... i went in with an open mind cuz i knew changes would have to happen since they are cramming so much in one movie
SPOILERS
the character mikasa was DESTROYED and it didn't make sense how she survived
and then the added on characters....i'm like whaaa??? like the "captain that should have been levi but wasn't"
and they were pushing armin x sasha and i'm like WHAAAAA????
Hanji was the best man
there was too many changes and things they added on were not explained

like the cgi was pretty good i really liked the titans and i get why they want to make some changes.....but can we have the additions make sense?
SPOILERS
for instance one....they added in that apparently eren had an older brother....it was never explained and they didnt go anywhere with it. they lalso never said who it was but i think it was the captain that will never be as awesome as levi
mom dies beforehand so the one that got "eaten" by the titan in front of eren was actually mikasa...and you're like what? but eren actually didn't SEE her get eaten but it was heavily implied. but SURPRISE BITCH SHE'S ACTUALLY STILL ALIVE. BUT ALL SHE GOT WAS A SCAR OF A BIT MARK ON HER TORSO AND ME AND MY FRIEND WERE LIKE ARE YOU GOING TO EXPLAIN THIS????????? according to movie mikasa she got out of it on her own
like some of these changes they don't make sense and the additions they added in...they left it unexplained
i think they were hoping to have a 2nd movie or something...

Yes, I know bad movies ruin great stories. And I don't think the series could be encapsulated in a single movie, but I do believe special effects have reached the point that this manga has the potential to be an amazing series of films.
Based on the other reply I received, it sound like Japan already made one bad movie with good CGI based on this series, so now I'd like to see a Hollywood version that had good special effects, but did a better job at sticking to the original storyline. Even a really well done live action series on a cable channel would be cool.

You know, I actually read this manga 'cause of the live action. I never came in contact with this story before, so I didn't have anything to compare the movie with at the time, still it left a bad taste. I found the entire 100 mins long intro over sexualized -Blue gender comes to mind, but that anime was better or at least i liked-
and the portrayal of "Levi" ?!?!, it's kind of hard to like a guy who whips it out every time to put his 'rival' in his place and mark his territory (aka. Mikasa). After reading the manga turns out everything i hated about the movie is actually not even part of the original story, i was ecstatic.

Wow, it's amazing to hear you describe the movie as sexualized because that is pretty much the polar opposite of the original manga. Yes, there are many, many doujinshi mangas based on this story that include incredibly adult content, but romance/sex is a pretty common theme in that type of independent, fan driven manga.
The idea that they tried to make the movie really sexual seems like further proof that the filmmakers didn't care about preserving the original story, but were instead interested in simply making a buck. For someone who really loves the original, that's kind of sad because it seems to me as though they are almost misleading anyone who sees the film without having read the source material.
Really glad you took the time to read the original since it's a truly unique and engaging series. Also glad you shared your insights into the film. I'm learning a lot about the movie from people on this site. It's been eye opening!
Alas, I still can't decide if I should go through with seeing the movie or stick to the vision I have of this story based on the mangas and the anime...
What a tease! I got all excited about an update.
Then, when I'm on the edge of my seat, BAM! it's over!
Can't wait for more...
You're not the only one. Iwad like, yipee! An update! Then I was crushed
