When I saw Mai in the anime, I honestly thought that she's trying to protect Maki by pulling her down, y'know that kind of sibling that choose to be a jerk instead of showing them love. Coz I think if Maki got the spotlight, she will be bullied/pulled down by their family or worse, planned to be killed coz she exceeded their expectation.
