I read this years ago so I might be mixing events but here's is what they're like as far as i remember. Her family actually likes her a lot but they're sooo bad at communicating and their ways of showing it is really messed up. The younger brother wanted her to come eat with all of them so what would he do? He would put stones(?) in her food when she eats alone in her room, he thought this would make her come eat with all of them because she would think he wont harm her food in front of others. When she expressed she wanted to move out, her older brother found her the most run down disgusting small house so that she gets tired of it and comes back to live with them. Like holyshit how are their brains having the most noble thoughts for her but show them in the worst possible way? This is all revealed when once penelope is able to see her og life after her collapsing for a bit, she didnt die like how yvonne shows her here, she actually goes into coma and is hospitalized. She sees her brothers sobbing by her side and revealing all of this, they comfess that they didnt know she would overwork herself to the point of collapsing (dumbos), thats when she gets to know her brother's true intentions but she doesnt forgive them as far as i remember coz they still did her wrong is worst possible ways. Their concern and love for her never reached her and for her, they made her life hell. I dont remember what happened in the end.
