Imo it's cause lots of mangaka have a terrible understanding of same-sex relationships to the point of having borderline homophobic views despite drawing BL. That's why the whole masculine seme/feminine uke dynamic is so set in stone instead of having vers characters ("because the bottom character is playing the female, duh"), and there's the terrible "I love you for who you are, not for your gender" trope, which maybe makes sense for pan/bi folks but not the majority of "straight-turned-gay" (which is totally bs) characters. I mean, sure, physical appearance isn't everything when it comes to attraction but it's definitely super super important!
