Maria after having a very traumatic thing happen to her aka witnessing her parents die or relatives right infront of her, being betrayed by her ex as his mistress births an heir, her own maid she had trusted being pregnant with another child loses her memories due to this traumatic event.
After the King of Helland witnesses Maria try to K** herself he realizes it he doesn't re-connect her memories and give her a new path in life, she would only hurt herself, meaning he wouldn't be able to control her as she might k**** herself without him being there. Since he loves Maria he decides in order to re-jog her memories he must teach her a new way of life, a lesson, through the mines she realizes a new purpose.
Maria despite being a very competent and very smart noble had no lessons on what commoner or people in the mines lived. She lost her ability to communicate and lost her way of life, through the mine she re-discovers her own path, she LEARNS for instance when that girl threw dirt in her eyes, a way of fighting unfairly and Maria realizing life itself is unfair, however despite how many peoples lige were unfair she still must venture on, why? Well idk. and through that newfound path she gains parts of her memory as well as a newfound purpose to keep her life meaningful and keep her from ki** herself
As the story will progress Maria will recover her memories one by one, and since the ML will present himself as a obstacle in her path so that she can soar even higher. He's willing to sacrifice his own image Maria has on him just so she can be happy, and live happy. I love the ML for that.
Once she surpasses that obstacle it would most likely re awaken her memories, however for now Maria must face the obstacles of the mines and outer powers like the woman from the palace, or mines ect.
When she finishes going through all these obstacles including that bitchass king or prince...
She'll be a a girl who stands strong, even without wealth, power or status. Why? Because the crown prince basicly controlled her life for 10 years. Or more.. and it's her choices that will undo what he did to her. And it's the choices the ML tries to lead Maria to, that will help her character development
