Im eight chapters deep and their dynamic reminds me a lot of Jake and Shin from Shutline? Almost identical??
Addicted to sex Korean American bottom, cool possessive American top. Jake tells Shin not to sleep around, Aaron tells Yujin to not get slutty in the toilets. I really like shutline so I think Im going to like this too
Seriously, Jake introduces Shin to a garage business bc cars are his passion and he makes friends with the people there. And then Aaron introduces Yujin to a studio manager bc singing is his passion and he makes friends with ppl in the studio. I dunno if Im just putting on a tinfoil hat but the similarities are suspicious
Totally did not expect that, its rare for the second male lead to end up with the MC, especially since the first ML and MC were childhood friends. I was also pretty undecided between the two MLs and although I do feel sad for Joohyuk, Im happy for Eun-oh and Dochan. This is Eun-oh’s story and he chose the person he felt happiest with, and that is Dochan. I wish we had more sexy scenes between them though
Taekyung in his own way is kinda twisted and possessive. He refuses to let go of Heeseo despite not wanting to get close to him either.
Hes implied to look for him constantly in the seven years he didnt see him, and he even masturbates to Heeseo too (bc this is a fictional story Ill overlook IRL impacts of SA, which btw is never okay)
And then he tells Heeseo that he put his own life on the line to protect Heeseos body and that Heeseo has no business hurting his own body… implying that Heeseo belongs to him, which Heeseo picks up on. Although Taekyung denies thats what he meant, when Heeseo says to mark him to signify belonging to him and to get him to behave, Taekyung bites him and doesn’t deny what he said a second time.
they both are… strangely twisted in their own ways but I can’t stop being hooked to their story and the gorgeous art.
Just smth that bothers me a bit. The title of this work is A Tree Without Roots, and although Heeseo and Taekyung both fit this description in that they are orphans, Taekyung was adopted into a family and he gets along with them while Heeseo is impulsive and trying to find somewhere to belong. But Taekyung is the one with a scar on his back that looks exactly like a tree… without roots. And this scar is the result of saving Heeseo. I wonder why the author chose to put a scar that looks exactly like the title name on Taekyung. Is it to say hes actually just like Heeseo I guess, in that his family is an illusion and hes really just a rootless tree or something else, or its just a callback to the title?
There’s a lot of moments in the novel where there’s just almost no way you could interpret their interactions as platonic. I found someone’s tumblr where they do translate a few chapters and snippets of chapters that highlight the homoerotic tension between them. Right now there’s about 15 or so posts ranging from translations from chapters 399-797. Their tumblr handle is lalune9x. One of my fave chapters lalune9x has translated and posted on her blog is chapter 469 where Yoojin declares to Hyunjae that he wants him to live however recklessly he wants and he’ll make sure it happens and that even if Hyunjae disappears or tries to run away, Yoojin will always drag him back. He confesses this in front of Taewon and Hyuna who are also there lol, and Yoojin blushes and can’t look Hyunjae in his face and hightails it out of there after that statement. Hyunjae’s reaction is also quite telling, hiding his face and saying that it drives him crazy. Ive bought some of the chapters on Ridibooks to compare the MTL translation and the tumblr creator really is doing gods work translating the Korean chapters and explaining the nuances of the Korean words
I really, really liked the comedy in this series and they both gave mad virgin energy despite being in their late twenties and early thirties so I went on a mad search for spoilers to see if that was true. I found the original Korean novel on google playstore books, link here:
https://play.google.com/store/books/series?id=ZR5GHAAAABAiAM
And spoilers:
In the novel they are both virgins, completely. Joohwan briefly dated a woman but couldn't have sex with her and got broken up with because he made her feel unwanted. And Sihyun as he got older attempted to sleep with a woman but couldn’t go through with it because of a certain someone. In fact Joohwan affected his sexual tastes and he became into being strangled lol, but only by Joohwan. After they do the deed in novel 2, both thinking the other had a lot of experience lmao, Sihyun thinks to himself that if he knew sex could be this good, he would have done it a lot sooner. Also, Sihyun thinks Joohwan is engaged and Joohwan doesn’t bother to clear this up until end of novel 3, when Sihyun gets engaged because of his family and Joohwan gets very upset and lets Sihyun know he doesn’t want Sihyun to get married marriage and confesses his feelings and virgin status to him lol. Sihyun thought being in a fake marriage was okay bc of his own parents and bc he thought Joohwan was already engaged to someone else but still doing it with him. It was also very funny when Joohwan blamed Sihyuns masochistic tastes on his nonexistent previous partners but then Sihyun tells him that his only partner has been Joohwan and Joohwan was the one who developed Sihyuns sexual tastes lol

Did he just name an STD instead of Hermes in chapter 1?? There wasnt a better substitute lmao?
