It's been a while since I read this through fully but i think it's more that he was suppressed along with everyone else (as a general commoner), and eventually made a name for himself way later and suffered because of his talent (but I don't think he dwells on it because he expected that). just wondering? did they ever address that? my memory is shot so I wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong
