I never wanted to bitch slap a MC more than this manga. You are a slave, you got your throne stolen, your man sent away, your people abused and shoved in positions where they can't even breathe without permission, you got betrayed, you got used, you got raped and you're still acting like everything will be hunky dory if you play a dumbass?
Just because you're ignoring the problem it doesn't mean everything will go as usual because again, you're a slave.
''Oh I know I have a knife on my throat, a gun to my head and my feet are shackled so I can't run but I'm sure that if I throw away the key to my freedom and act like an obedient slave they won't kill me!''
People around you want to use your for politics and you don't have the power to refuse. Just because you act ignorant to the problem it doesn't mean you will be spared from their abuse.
Absolute fucking moron, I genuinely can't believe this guy used to be a good and smart leader people used to follow.
At this point I want to see more of Lister because MC is so absolutely stupid the only way for him to understand the gravity of the situation is by being absed by Lister again.
He only yearns for freedom when he's being abused but once the abuse is over, he's fine with being a slave again.
He has a hole in his roof. On rainy days it's too wet to work, and on sunny days the roof doesn't need fixing.
I refused help from my man, I refused to rebel and I burn letters from the only people who care about my life and safety but I'm sure I'll be fine if I keep my mouth shut and pray to god that the people who love abusing me, won't abuse me again!
Oh they want to marry me to my rapist? How couldn't I see this coming...
I've never seen a character who wants to be a victim so much. I'm almost gonna think he gets hard from it or something.
I understand that he might be too scared to act but they way he never even attempts to protect himself in the slightest is baffling, especially since he knows what Li*ter is capable of.
Your own man, the only person you can actually trust is telling you point blank that they betrayed you and stole your powers from you, demoting you to a slave they can use and abuse without consequence and you're still kissing their ass??
''They rescued me, they helped me'' how do you know that if you don't remember your past? you believe 2 of the most powerful people who have the capability of erasing and rewriting history but not the only survivors of your people who want the best for you?
He actively ruins his life, never taking a step to protect himself or make an escape route and then gets surprised when the person who loves using and abusing him, wants to use and abuse him again.
God I hope you never meet a mentally ill person in your life this rant of yours is gross.
He doesn't know Lister raped him, he doesn't recognise his own lover, he can't trust anyone not even himself, he doesn't have a victim mentality he is a victim and has been robbed of any power he ever had and you blame him. Either you read this whole story wrong or more likely you simply don't understand what it means
??? He was the one getting raped??? obviously he knows??? He does remember his lover, who point blank told him that these people betrayed him behind his back and took advantage of him.
He remembered being lovers with ML, ML said they were lovers, everybody around them told him multiple times they were lovers, literally what else needs to happen for him to know they're lovers?
I'm not blaming him for being a victim, I'm blaming him for wanting to keep being one even after seeing how much his people wants to save him from it. He's not even doing anything himself, he just sits there while everyone around him does all the plotting.
He only remembered his past after his follower took out his previous doctor and managed to claw her way to being his new health expert.
All he has to do is wait for his people to give him the solution to his problems in a silver platter but he STILL doesn't take the initiative to look at the letter even after all the trouble doctor had to go trough just to reach him.
His followers decided to follow him to their demise but he still doesn't trust them, he only trusts the queen who not only lets Lister abuse him, but was also revealed to betray MC when he was at his lowest.
''She doesn't know!!'' she obviously knows. At the very start of the story she saw him being abusive towards MC and asked him if he's hurting MC again. After that she's still letting him walk away with a few punches instead of a proper punishment.
That's not protecting him, she's only pretending to punish Lister while she's letting him do whatever he wants, even going as far as to marry him to MC despite knowing how abusive he is.
She's just like Lister, she's taking advantage of her slave status to force him into a marriage he obviously detests. Their only difference is Lister is a physical abuser while the queen tries to mask it as concern.
Despite all that MC is still only trusting the queen while everyone around him is begging him to fucking do literally anything. They lost their friends, families, lovers to follow MC but he can't even be fucking bothered to read a letter.
Then he acts shocked when the obviously abusive people are being abusive towards him.
He has the opportunity to rebel for this one chance only. He has ML at his side, he has a sliver of freedom to roam around and he has his people to do the plotting for him but he's such a coward he chooses to turn a blind eye to everything around him because for some reason he keeps flip flopping about his slave status.
He rebels when Lister is abusing him but he calms down when Lister is away. He doesn't even realize that once the queen is gone, Lister has the power to do anything he wants and acting all nice and calling himself a slave won't save him from getting raped again.
He doesn't realize that acting ignorant to the rebellion and calling himself a lowly slave won't protect him from getting burned too.
Forget about the rebellion, he doesn't bother to protect himself or give himself an escape route if things get too tough LIKE A FORCED MARRIAGE.
I understand him for not snitching on Lister because queen already knows. She let him get away with it for so long so if he tells, the only punishment for him will be a punch or elbow he can just get more enraged about.
Yes MC is mentally ill but he's still capable of plotting and scheming by the way we saw him use the child to exchange info and hide the map fragments.
He currently knows that his memories were gone because of the queen and the only way to get them back is trough the doctor giving him different meds, shown by map fragments showing up on the same place MC tried to hide the new ones.
Justifying his acting by calling him mentally ill is so infantilizing, acting like he's incapable of doing anything to plot his way out when we already saw him do it before.
His mental illness is caused by the queen too, he knows this. He knows that the queen intentionally used meds to damage his memories so he could stay incapable and the only reason he's remembering is because of the new doctor. HE KNOWS.
HE KNOWS the queen is a two faced lying plotter but STILL he's choosing her side even though she made it obvious that she doesn't really care about MC, only cares about their past relationship and sentimentality.
It's really dumb how him burning the map is the ''only time'' he made a dumb decision like he wasn't actively deciding to trust the queen who he knows at this point:
-Revealed to betray MC
-Revealed to betray ML after promising to look after MC
-Intentionally giving MC harmful meds to damage his mind and memories more
-Intentionally letting Lister get away with his abusive without doing anything to protect MC from him
-Intentionally choosing Lister's side and agreeing to wed him to MC despite knowing his abusive side
-Intentionally trying to get rid of ML from getting in her way and rescuing MC
-Keeping MC's people under surveillance in case they try to help MC
Despite everything MC still choses the queen's side, acting like being obedient will prevent him from being abused more even though he got proven wrong time and time again.
''I'm a slave, I need to repent'' He knows. He's not that stupid, he knows that his past, his power and his politics were stolen away from him but he still decides to stay ignorant because he somehow can't comprehend that Lister will come after him regardless if he rebels or not.
By rebelling, he's at least preparing a way out for himself, by being obedient, he's actively shooting himself in the foot because he thinks that a devil spawn will have mercy on him.
I'm betting 100 dollars, MC will only rebel once Lister does something to him again. Because we saw time and time again, MC only rebels and looks for a way out when Lister abuses him and he gets desperate to get away.
He only decides to protect himself when he drives himself in a corner by refusing help from the only people who cares about him.
Okay I think I got confused because I know the spoilers but I meant the rape that caused him to have a mental breakdown before the start of the story and you meant the sexual assault that happens in the servants quarters, that's my bad.
Lysbeth is just as bad as her brother imo but my point is that you don't seem to understand just how disabled the MC is despite the depictions being very clear. In the last chapters he was confronted by someone who pointed out how hollow he is his psychosis episode and I hope you never understand the feeling of having to rebuild your personality from scratch but I find it to be very realistic.
In the first part of the story he has no memories of his adult life and is being drugged and abused and from this point on he has done things like quitting medication and having seizures. This is how a disabled person left to fend for themselves would act, I know because I've done these things. Quitting medication because I was tired of always being catatonic gave me paranoia and the wrong medication made me allucinate and dissociate. When you can't trust your mind you trust no one not even the people who love you.
Silhan thinks that Gjiord is going to kill people for him and he doesn't want that, he thinks Gjiord loves the person he was before while now he's just a shell, he thinks he doesn't deserve different because he doesn't know who he used to be. Happiness becomes really scary once you've been suffering for a while, but he's still trying to maintain a bit of his fight like wanting to recover his memories (which will cause him to suffer) and getting away from Lister.
Tbh I think there's plenty of stories where the MC is not only unjustifiedly dumber but ends up with the Lister of the story while this one is mostly an exploration of the struggles that a mental decline brings, and it's well done because I've never related this much to a MC.
I get you anger but I think you're missing the point, even Gjiord hides stuff from him he can't trust anyone not even himself and that's why he's giving up the big fight.
You know what, you're right about the mental illness stuff, I was enraged that he was pushing his freedom away but I've never been in that kind of situation so maybe if I was in his place I would be terrified too.
But I'm still iffy on that last line because even though both sides are hiding stuff from MC, ML is the only side who actually cares about MC.
He knows that ML made a deal with the queen to protect MC but they betrayed him behind his back and treated MC this horribly. If you compare sides, ML is the only side who's willing to die for MC.
He's already sleeping around with him despite knowing ML is enemy #1 right now, he already crossed that line and conspired with his people so him suddenly pulling back and becoming obedient again is infuriating because he seemed really close to remembering his past.
Even if he's scared of being executed, he knows that Lister is willing to torture him for his own sick pleasure so him deciding to stay behind without doing anything to protect himself is really a dumb choice.
That's true, he is being stupid in many ways.
He believes he will disappoint Gjiord and the others because he is no longer the person they loved and doesn't even remember them, of course their affection was welcome but as soon as they put expectations on him he runs. I think the threat of Lister will be his turning point though, it's clear he believes the queen cares for him up to a point. In the end she always protects her family first.
I hope you can try and see it from the point of view of following someone who needs to learn to be a person again, to Remember Who they are and take back their life. It will be difficult and he will fuck up but I've enjoyed following his story so far because I see a lot of myself and others like me in it, I hope you do too
I'm sorry but I like this mangaka more than the original.
The original is a masterpiece, it's amazing, it uses every single character to their fullest potential and makes them shine while giving them their own moment to save the day but damn.
The dramatic scenes in the original are amazing but this one is on another level.
It's literally incredible how the mangaka manages to make every single character so cunty, so pretty, so twisted, so incredibly exciting to follow.
Kiriwo in the original was amazing, he was a really likable character but the way this mangaka focuses on Kiriwo's emotional side more just speaks to me more.
Yes he was emotional and determined in the original but at the end of the day he just let his demon side take over his situationship with Iruma and forgot about them being soulmates because the prospect of eating him became more important.
This one? Kiriwo is fully okay with killing himself if it's with the guy he met yesterday. No matter how much you hype their relationship in the original, it won't reach this level of insane romance between them.
The reason why I like this Iruma over the original is because the original is more childish in it's nature with everything being solved with the power of friendship and good nature meanwhile this one is a lot more unforgiving when it comes to dark topics.
In the original, if things get really fucked we can always trust on characters like Sully to solve the problem because Iruma is a child who's not even allowed to touch problems bigger than himself but this one?
In this manga, Iruma is basically all alone at the top. Yes Sully exists but Iruma is given much more power than the original because instead of just being a grandson who's only duty is to bring good grades, this Iruma is tasked with not only being a good leader to his subjects but to also completely reform the mafia to fit his ideals.
In the original the topic of ''what would you do with the underworld if you had power'' is brought up a lot but it always seems like a distant problem because Iruma is a student first and he's only in his first year. Not only he has 4 years of school to complete but he also has to defeat the other grandsons for the throne.
This one? Iruma is already on the throne and his duty is actually using that power to morph the mafia into his ideal group. He has to train, he has to recruit and he has to protect his subject from dying.
That's a level of responsibility Iruma is just not ready for in the original. Yes he protected his friends from danger in the original but it was never his DUTY to do it. He just had to because of circumstances.
His life consists of having fun with his friends which is sometimes interrupted with messed up situations that the grown ups couldn't handle alone.
This one? his entire life goal is to not literally fucking die! He's forced to be stronger so he could protect the people around him because there's nobody else who can do it. He's at the top, he's the leader so he HAS TO get his eagle on.
In the original he can always be protected by the magical adults around him who are determined to protect the students from dangerous topics (like the traitor arc where they all said fuck the exam in order to capture the spider guy)
In this version there are no magic powers, no magical solutions and no power plays. They are all just human beings who can only do what human beings can do to get out of situations.
The way Iruma looked so twisted and evil? it would never happen in the original because Iruma being a good person was the entire reason why the demons around him got enchanted by his kindness.
Original Iruma would never need to be wicked evil and cruel in order to save the day because the people around him follow and help him save the day.
People who only started liking him becase of his unwavering determination and kindness.
This version? he has no problem risking his death if it means victory. He got used to the cruel and wicked ways of the mafia and he has no problem using those same methods to achieve him goals.
In the original, Iruma would never do anything evil and twisted without being pushed into a corner or being manipulated
Not just because he's a good person but because he's surrounded by magical people who are always on high alert to protect the children from danger.
If things go wrong, Sully or literally any other extremely powerful demons can rush into the scene to provide a solution but it's just not possible in this version.
In this world they're all limited by their humanity. They can't just use magic to save the day.
That's why Iruma using his wicked and cruel side to turn the tables is always such a fresh and insteresting thing to see.
You would never see Iruma smile like that or manipulate a slave trader to sell his soul for 3 dollars. The darker side of things are always hid from the students because they're children.
In this one Iruma has friends yes, but he isn't afraid to use fucked up methods to get his way if it means happiness for his people.
It's so insanely cool and amazing seeing an innocent cinnamon roll act like a real demon to turn the tables.
The art is amazing too. It was good in the original and the big dramatic moments always get the shine they deserve but oh my god.
This one almost seems like an art upgrade, the dramatic moments hit more because there's always more risk involved and the genre being darker than the original.
The original the story is all about demons but we never see anything too dark because we view it from the child protag's eyes who is usually kept away from the darker sides by the adults.
The original is a determined character who always tries their best to save the day like a regular shounen protag but you would never see him use fucked up methods to achieve it because there's always a bigger powerful person to protect him if things get too tough.
Like Sully rushing to stop the fireworks from burning students, Mephisto killing the sea monsters, teachers trying to capture the spider traitor etc.
In this one Sully is on the same power level of Iruma who is a human being. Their only power difference lies on their experience / position levels. Otherwise both of them can die to the same nuclear bomb.
That's why it feels more urgent and stressful here because even if you know how the original goes and what will happen, you still get stressed because they can't magically save the day.
It starts changing the story little by little because you have to substitute the scenes of magic with human beings trying their best to come up with a plausible plan to save the day instead.
I truly enjoy your review, but I guess if there's a downside to the mafia au, it's that there's no misfit around iruma. And tbh, I like that the original iruma was weak to begin with (in a way he couldn't beat the stronger demon who's literally an adult) often in shounen you will see the protagonist (a literal teenage) powercrept their seniors and teachers just because they, well, the protagonist, but that power creep didn't happen in iruma and they had reliable adults around them and that's what made me like og iruma in the first place hehe
I think Iruma is weaker in this one. He's inexperienced and he definitely lacks the brawls to depend on when the situation gets tough as opposed to OG who has the ring of gluttony and his archery skills to get out of situations, not even counting Ali.
This Iruma has to try really hard to come up with a perfect plan at the spot, using every means possible even if it means being cruel and wicked.
That's why I like this version over the original.
In the original Iruma always has a way out, be it Sully, his friends or his magical powers as opposed to this one where even a single wrong decision could lead to his people getting massacred. He has to claw his way to victory even if it means stabbing people in the back or being intentionally wicked to get his way.
ARRRGGHHHHH I'm boutta rip my skin off my face I love this manga so much
I can't help it man, how am I supposed to ship Javier with the girl who only shows up for 10 chapters max when Javier yearns for his ''friend'' for years and tries to bring him back even if it mean cleaving trough dimensions to be with him?
I love the Queen and I 1000% support him but maaaan imagine if this was BL.
It's really tragic, watching a shounen where the male protags have insane chemistry and they yearn for each other like their lives don't matter without the other but they always gotta end with women because reasons.
At least in this story the female characters actually have personalities and are very well written but maaan imagine if they were just allowed to make them kiss.
Narusasu core tbh.
T-t-the Dokkaebi King??!?!?! Aaand yup, it's all over the screen, dattebayo fellas!
The clairvoyance girl piss me off ''She could've got a good sponsor'' you almost killed her ass just to look cool in front of the cons shut yo pretentious ass up
She trying to aurafarm like she's the main character, just go home you're embarrassing yourself.

If the only time he can recall ML being gullible is from when he was crayon eating age then maybe he needs to chill out.
The fact that the brother literally had no idea about the stalker proves that he can't be there to protect him all the time.
Keeping him caged is only gonna make him more dependent on you, to the point he can't protect himself anymore.
And let's not forget that he's a grown ass man who's definitely stronger than your average human, he can definitely protect himself.
