The dad was trapped in the gate they said he was in, then the rulers which are like enemies of sovereign, except the shadow sovereign gave the dad power to go back and later protect jin woo, the only thing is once he was done protecting the MC enough to finally allow the full shadow sovereigns powers to come through The MC, he would die, when I read it in the novel it was really sad and they only like say a couple words to each other they don’t even hug
