if people hate a character no matter what, theres no point arguing. because stories are made to provoke your thoughts and underlying beliefs.
of course we as people want others to see our point of view; like if someone says hill is guilty of being complicit in the crimes committed by his father and is selfish for leaving his child, i could counter by saying that he grew up adjusting to his lack of autonomy and its justified that he be given the chance to finally enjoy that long-awaited freedom. i could also argue that this is his way of protecting his vulnerable older brother, who, unlike his child, has nobody to protect him (the baby will be fine bro).
and even in this way, by leaving, he thinks this will also save his child from prejudice, as the people are brutal towards the enemy remnants (as seen with how they desire to severely punish his brother). if he stays, not only is there a chance he may never come upon the opportunity to taste true freedom (because it seems the ML is unable to go against the wishes of his people as of now), but even his child will inherit the sins of his part of the bloodline.
even so, i can see where people can see fault in hill. if you are ultimately supportive of him and his choices, then perhaps that says something about how you view individual rights. if you are ultimately against him and his choices, then maybe that says something about how you view responsibility and how you value familial bonds (especially innocent and faultless beings such as babies and children) and having moral restitution.
either way, there is no competition in measuring beliefs.
