Alzheimer's isn't reversible so I highly doubt that's what he had/has. There are plenty of medical issues that can cause brain fog/confusion/memory loss. I had a coworker who had a brain tumour the size of a grapefruit! It was pushing on the memory centre in his brain and causing memory loss. So it could be something like that maybe.

yes the removal usually helps / eases / sometimes even fixes the issue, because the issues usually start showing when the tumor is pushing on the brain, and if its possible to operate it successfully and safetly, then by extracting it you should go back to normal !
