Sadly, Western influence and religious values after WWII had a lot to do with the current Japanese VIEW on homosexuality. Way, way back in the day (think Shogun), homosexuality was a normal and accepted thing, albeit hidden away. Yes, marriage and producing heirs was the highest importance, but homosexuality was there, everyone knew it, no big deal. There are tons of antique Japanese works of art - paintings, sculptures, that depict homosexuality. Since WWII and the westernization of Japan, their opinions have changed to match those of the U.S., mostly. Now, that we are rising above those old opinions and accepting and legalizing gay marriage, I hope Japan will once again follow.
I really liked the art. It's not cutesy or pretty like most manga, and it has a touch of realism to the character's features, but without being too real. Like I can imagine what they would look like in real life.
I love this color page of Mizusawa's face though - his eyes are like whirling swirls of...CD's? haha

After reading chapters 9-12, the person I feel sorry for the most, is Usaki's poor step-mom:
1) Whose husband (Usaki's dad) was literally screwing Benio while she was giving birth (he was sleeping around with other people while she was pregnant, too). Papa didn't even show much enthusiasm for the birth of his son after he got the news by phone, instead he continues his romp with Benio after telling him "it's a boy."
2) Whose young step-son (Usaki/Usagi) fell in love with and wanted to be screwed by Benio, because Benio couldn't keep his hands off him.
Who could like the pairing of the father and Benio when the father was a married man with an expecting wife? She didn't even have to make an appearance to be the one on the biggest losing end. If he was a single parent raising Usaki, that would be a different thing. Ugh. (╬ ̄皿 ̄)凸
Papa is a selfish prick, and so is Benio. Usaki is just a poor, unsuspecting, and immature pawn in the whole messed up situation.
The story wasn't meant to have a definite end. Aida says it so many times, that he's a "poet - in the making." He has an almost supernatural ability to attract men and women, so he works as a talent scout for AV videos, but he's really somewhat mentally innocent to the world. Although all he really wants to do is become a poet, his special ability and his job are going to get him into all sorts of trouble and experiences. Thus - Poet Was Not Built In A Day - it's his journey and it's going to continue.
A lot of readers don't mind cheating and a lot of readers hate it. Cheating characters provide opportunities for more story lines. What I think readers don't like is when the person being cheated on gives in and forgives too easily. We want justice. We want to see the cheater get his ass handed to him on a platter of "fuck you, man-whore." We want to see him cry rivers of emotional pain, torment, and regret. It would be much more satisfying than the seme saying, "Oh, my bad. I do love you, so I'll drop my phones in the water NOW that I see how sad you are after a year of going out, even though I should have been man enough to avoid hurting you in the first place."
What pissed me off the most was this seme's possessiveness - not wanting the uke to be touched by anyone else. How is this fair? Do as I say and not as I do? Get over yourself, you self-centered hypocrite. I hate you.
Anyway, I think there could have been a better story here, but the plot twists were a bit far-fetched, the character's reasons for doing what they did were lame, and the ending felt shallow.

I've posted before about how much I love this manga, and I come back to it every once in a while for a re-read, but I just wanted to add that I love it when Izumi lapses back into his home dialect. Especially this page (top left):

I'm not ashamed to say that I've caught myself saying this to my kids. They're 21(boy) and 17 (girl), and we get along great, so don't think I'm a bad mom please. :) My daughter thinks it's hilarious that I read yaoi. I keep trying to get her to read some of my favorites. (≧∀≦)
sorry if this sounds a bit rude...but do you also show your daughter the smexy scenes?? ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶ just asking...
I don't bother to show her because she just laughs and rolls her eyes. Plus yeah, it's a little embarrassing.
ahh..ok~hahaha cuz i also tried to show some of my friends the 'fluffy' scenes and their reactions were the same...hahaha
