I dont get it, why write the names in such a way that they will not be pronounced correctly? Like write Tong if its pronounced tong.....?
because this is how you romanize chinese :) this system was created 70 years ago based on earlier romanization systems and is the official system used both by the chinese government and most all mandarin learners/speakers/teachers. to answer your other question, "tong" already represents a different sound, which sounds like "toe-ng" in english.
So it was always inaccurate? And now its too late to change?
it's not inaccurate. the world does not revolve around english, and the latin alphabet was not england's to begin with. this is why you will find many languages that use the latin alphabet in some way shape or form, especially european ones, that have the letter "a" pronounced more as "o", the letter "e" pronounced as "eu", etc. the alphabet is tailored to the language that uses it. "arton" in swedish is not pronounced the way you'd think it is from an english speaking perspective, but that doesnt make it inaccurate or wrong. it's just another language. keep in mind chinese has many vowels so the latin alphabet will be used in a way in which you personally are not familiar with, and that pinyin was not created to help english people specifically understand chinese. it was made for everyone. basically what im saying is that this romanization is not wrong or does not need to be changed, because not only is this language chinese, but this is the internationally recognized and officially used romanization system for the chinese language, which is not connected to english, and thus it does not need to, and in some cases will not, make sense to english speakers.
I think everyone needs to use IPA!
eh harder to type remember and standardize and keep but ¯_(ツ)_/¯
