the mc's having to leave her only friend in the group to go protect 2 people who are terrified of her with a person who isn't acting like he did in the source material... Gotta admit I'm pretty suspicious of this whole setup.

Since, even if his entire personality has changed, it's still the same brains and heart coming up with everything that's happening. It was already showed in the previous chapters that a personality change like this wouldn't hold if it wasn't just bringing another aspect of himself out. So it proves that all of the things he did weren't all just luck. He does have some serious skills, he just doesn't have the confidence to back it up.
I hate ones that go "oh the girl that's always been trying to get my attention is no longer interested in me, I am suddenly intensely interested in her" I mean if she doesn't like you anymore, then leave her alone??? You have no more right to her now then anyone else does and quite frankly even less now. And don't get me started on the dad, if that sister of hers doesn't start going off on him soon I'm gonna have to start hating her too.
