He also did a lot of self reflection and came to a conclusion that this is just his bad karma for having a child despite being a priest. Notice how this is also a cycle in the story? Whenever something bad happens to Ashya, he automatically blames himself for "betraying Lord Lux". That is a sign of brainwashing caused by the high priest. This is justified by the fact that ML's kingdom also believes in Lord Lux. But priests can marry there and gain money.
Dude was brainwashed into thinking he triggered bad things to Ashya. If you can’t understand how psychology breaks you, then I've got nothing more to say to you. He is also a victim of his own circumstance. Given that doesn't excuse how that caused FL's death 9 times, but that doesn't mean we can call him all the bad words in the dictionary because he picked bad choices. Also he only ever somehow caused Ashya's death like 2 or 3 times. The others times she died was because she run away from the family that "raised" her.
