And he is so young so he's naturally insecure about things especially because he thinks it's his responsibility to take care of his family. It must be overwhelming for him and he must feel like he has failed as a dad and the protector of his family. I think the best would be if he'd become a stay at home dad for some time to get a feel for things and feel like he's a natural part of his family again.

I disagree with you on it not fitting the flow. The author's hinted at/foreshadowed pregnancy multiple times in the last 5 or so chapters: "Don't get pregnant," "It felt like was something filling my stomach," etc. Also, this couple's whole MO is charging through and then figuring out what's happened after the fact, so it'd fit with that relationship structure. They've never seemed to care about "the proper order of things."
