Taichi wouldn't be conflicted and desperate if he saw Touma as a mere friend. The reason he's destroying the furniture (lol) is probably because he's scared of viewing Touma as more than a friend
I feel like Taichi’s self conflict isn’t over viewing Touma as more than a friend but the possibility of losing a very close friend with the decision he makes. The rejection itself would not destroy their relationship but the way they act thereafter would definitely change. He’s worried that they can’t go back to the way they used to be. That in pursuing his relationship with Kuze and fully rejecting Touma, he’s finalising the boundary drawn between Touma and himself. He doesn’t want that but at the same time doesn’t know how to fix it- cue his indecisiveness and his stand-offish nature around Touma. It also doesn’t help when the school has made it their business to intervene and decide fire him; those girls who were talking shit about Kuze at the shoe lockers and the two boys from this chapter who are antagonising Taichi for being indecisive or neutral have no right to do so.
(spoilers) I feel like the war between Saegye and Jinsol is about to break out...
