Her family is too powerful (right below the royal family), and she is afraid the King/Queen will eliminate them - because otherwise the Alberts could be a threat to the throne. But if she is ruined, then the family will lose political power => no longer a threat => they will be safe.
So she thinks of bloody politics and chooses self sacrifice. Pretty drastic thinking, but not a bad plan imho.
