The start wasn't good as well because it was obvious he looked at him a Shingo's replacement. There's also the factor where he felt lonely because his father got taken by someone else as well. Rio needs to man up and be mature. He needs to reflect and think for himself not rely on the feeling that someone likes him to fill his loneliness. Ritsu has to be firm and not give in otherwise it wouldn't end well.
