In olden times, to make the color gold or heavily pigmented colors(like green or purple) the dye used dangerous chemicals that were toxic to humans. I usually get really annoyed with miscommunication but I don't blame her for not trusting anybody with the secret. She was living this life for so long, that it became a part of her. She really did imagine that these children were her own and now that she's got to lose everything because of this evil uncle, she's going to sacrifice herself.
