I liked that we didn't have to wait for the story to progress to its current stage. It would have been a killer to wait chapter after chapter. But i don't think the scanlators succeeded in creating a clinching cliffhanger. I actually think there were other places that they could have left us. Thank you for that =)

First, I don't care about the emperor so much in this story but since the imperial harem exists, in the culture and time period of the story, objectively we can't just simply impose our 21st century monogamy ideology. Second, I actually care more for the female lead empress and how she'll own everyone. It's the primary reason I'm holding on this story.
that said, it's not correct to assume the emperor has all the power in the world to defy the existence of an imperial harem. even if the emperor is the son of heaven and no one is above him in the empire, that isn't quite true. An emperor can only rule with the power that his officials allow for him to have; and to an extent the empress dowager who can have a significant control and influence over the imperial harem (or literally the back court) especially as the mother of the emperor--but that's a whole other issue of power and control which I'll leave out from here on. Back to the officials...If the officials constantly veto and negate an emperor, there isn't much power for the emperor; especially if he doesn't have good allies with power among the officials. I can't say for certain here since we're still fresh into this story but I'm leaning towards the circumstances here as a mixture of the greed of his officials and his own "me above all" majesty attitude (and can't exactly blame him for that personality when he was raised to think as so; blame those who brought him up). Likely there's a good amount of these concubines who were brought in at the "behest" of his officials, creating political ties and such. It doesn't mean he necessarily needs to have a bad relationship with all of his concubines either (nor should he since that would provoke the ire of his officials; especially those with power). Anyway, what I'm saying is that in those days, an harem was another tool of power; not just lust.

stories like this involving the monarchs are MUCH more complicated than some people expected especially when it comes to power and influence and succession. some people need to understand that they usually marry and take concubines not only to have heirs but also to strengthen their ties with other families & nations, securing their power and influence, and to sometimes prevent war. it is more than women trying to kill each other or smth.
surprisingly decent read. thanks for the upload.
