I can't read Japanese, but it seems like Shizu later reads up on sexuality to develop a better understanding of his own. The author appears to want to sever off the notion that Shizu would ever leave Mina over any societal or parental expectation. Also, Shizu's parents seem the kind who'd approve of both their son's gay relationships (there's a pocket of cool people out there in a world full of bitter Betty's).
