I have mixed feelings about him but he deserved better too.

I actually agree with you. I would have liked it if that relationship had been explored and deepened. Hayes seems like a fundamentally decent man. Boone's behavior didn't make a lot of sense. It's like he couldn't decide if he loved her or hated her.
