The Manga changed details from the web novel, if i remember correctly it wasn't like this in the web novel so I guess that they are following the new light novel, it is one of my favorite web novels though so I'm sad that they are changing some details I hope that they won't ruin the story with them :(

It's a source of income, according to the webtoon, players can sell their acquired items to other players with real money.
For example, if a monster dropped a really sword that is hard to get, other players might just buy it instead of go fighting monster for it. So the more good, rare, items you get, the more other desire to have it, the more you can sell them for. That's my understanding at least.
