Well..being an Asian, I know why the mother gave him a skirt. There is a old common perception that a gay man is actually a woman trapped in a man's body.
The younger generations could understand the difference between gays and trans apart but not the older generations.
The anime truly brought these guys to life. Kusakabe is just wonderful and Saoju turns out to be more sensitive than what the manga portrays. I have totally fallen in love with these two guys.
Guess it's more important to save face instead of looking out for his own son. Sad how he is being treated as a possession, a slave to family name. No wonder he was doing what he was doing trying to numb himself.
