What I understood he knew she had a mask on her and she was suffering acting as another person and he wanted to break that mask and make her asks him help and be herself!
He didn't know she is in fact his half-sister, he thought she was a girl who looked like his dad and sister that his dad selected, he knew his father was cold to her and he wanted she break free and asks him help by bullying her... yep... that was his reason, he tormented her believing that will break her mask and be herself or show her real self to him...
So, like I said, and abuser will not see his actions as abuse!
Also, the reason MC's father is loyal to the king is because the king have been menacing him to kill his two sons, in fact the king planned to kill one of the two boys to show the duke that his menace was real but he accidentally killed the daughter instead, so he is scared of the king. Still not a reason of what he has been doing to our MC or what he did in the past!.

It was a small part of the novel, but after she attacks Ricardo. He gets upset and asked her why. Then he remembers abandoning her to save Gabrielle. He tries to make excuse, but she shuts him down. She tells she doesn't want to hear it and she doesn't care if he gets injured. It was so great. It's not a cruical part, but it was so good to read.
