The relationship between Phelps and the Emperor is superficial at best. He finds her to be a kindred spirit because she also has trauma involving her family. She basically just tricks the Emperor into taking her side, by pretending to empathize with him. She doesn't love him and that is very aparent. Phelps to the Emperor is his only ally. That why he is so desperate to keep her around. He learns that is a mistake.
As far as the story goes, Emperor is a piece of shit, no doubt. However, he does improve.
But if you hate the Emperor and Phelps the story is most certainly worth sticking around because they both get the karma. The Empress is probably one of my characters in this type of genre, because she such a strong character.

It's takes a while to get to this point, but still very much worth it.
The Empress and Heinley (Prince to King) grow really close overtime, and the Emperor is absolutely pissed about it. He hates their growing friendship and believes that are they are lovers. Heinley falls in love with the Empress and wants her to leave with him. However, the Empress doesn't want to lose her status and rejects him and chooses to remain the Empress for her people.
As the novel goes on Trasha starts to sow more discourse between the Empress and Emperor by lying and being stupid. (I can't quite remember what she does, I tried to wipe my brain of her. She is a really shitty person.) One specific event was about the bird.
I'm only including this, because it shows the Emperor's cruelty towards the Empress. During a dispute between the Empress and Emperor (I believe it was about Heinley, I'm not to sure), the Emperor orders that all blue bird wojld be shot down. The Empress and Heinley were messaging with each other through a blue bird. The bird gets shot and captured. The Emperor then orders the cooks to the feed the dead bird to the Empress. The Empress distraught falls ill and the Emperor feel guilty for his actions. Then tries to gift a new blue bird, which Empress rejects.
Trasha then takes the bird because it pretty and she is jealous of the Empress of recieving such a gift. She yanks out some of its feathers and lies to the Emperor about the Empress abusing it.
He gets mad and takes the bird, which makes Trasha upset because she wanted it.
The bird wasn't actually killed and I believe the bird is a mage that works for Heinley, he's alive, so don't worry about that.
Empress begins to realize she truly loved the Emperor, but their relationship was already over by the time she realized. Around the same time, the Emperor begins plotting to divorce the Empress and marry Trasha, so that her baby can be recognized as an heir. Of course, the Empress gets wind of this and plots as well.
Prince Heinley becomes King just for the Empress. (He is a really great guy) Empress agrees to marry the King soon after her divorce.
The event of the divorce.
The Emperor drags a Priest to divorce the Empress and so that way he can marry Trasha. The Empress agrees only if she able to get married immediately after. The Emperor dumbfounded, hadn't expected this. For this fool's plan was to marry Trasha until she had the baby, then divorce so that the Empress could be reinstated. The Emperor didn't believe that Trasha was suitable to be the empress. However, he wasn't expecting the Empress to remarry immediately after the divorce and not to King Heinley.
The Emperor tries to stop them, but the Priest agrees to it. Apparently only the church can dictates who is allowed to marry, not the Emperor. However, since the Empress is a citizen of the empire, he puts her on house arrest with the King, then tries to find away to stop the marriage. He realizes he can't keep the King there unless he wants to start a war, he allows the King to leave, but not the Empress. The Emperor realizes the only was to stop their marriage (king/empress) is to void their divorce. Which he actually considers.
(I don't remember his name, but he is close with Heinley and kind of coaches Trasha) The Duke goes to release the King, but finds the Empress to be a good ruler and helps her escape as well.
This is just small stuff, that happens much later. But the Empress was able to have children of her own, and is very happy with the King. The Emperor is infertile.
The Emperor begins to resent Trasha, and longs for the Empress. He regrets all that he did to her and wants to be with her again. She doesn't feel the same way. I don't know when he finds out it is not his kid.
For the question who is the baby daddy of Trasha's baby. I don't remember but I believe it is the son of her past slave owner. I believe he is the father.
