I had to reread the final chapters of the novel to check. Maybe it's interpretation, but even earlier comments say the same thing and even warned people that they'll be disappointed by the ending (depending how you take it).

Anyways, I figured it'll be elderly figures to bridge the gap! Jae is very smart but was emotionally inept, or at the very least, forcibly ignoring them. While Danny took a lot of things face value and couldn't read Jae's actions well. Admitting defeat for the first time is a good first step.
