I think it’s more like a comedy gag? I’ve heard them use it when I watched commentary/reality tv shows when I visited Japan. Not a drama btw, like they’re interviewing people or celebrities are watching some funny thing and they just add that coupled with a cheesy sound effect. I also hear it in radio interviews lol.

Japanese make the sound ‘eh’ when they’re surprised. Usually it’s a pretty short sound like when being shocked and say ‘what’. Eh is stressed out and longer when something is really surprising

It could be like unconscious reaction. Just like how we can unconsciously move our limbs, they can do the same thing but with their scent. You dont really think about how happens, all you know is you can control it and it doesn't take any true thought in order to control it.
