It’s definitely exaggerated but I think that’s how it feels in conservative spaces. It feels like everyone is staring, thinking about you, judging you, talking about you. I don’t think that scene has to be taken so literally because it seems more like it’s Naruse’s perception than anything.

I mean my point is completely valid considering the author using a lot of imagery and symbolism during that scene and of Naruse literally running out of the darkness and it all being metaphoric for self acceptance and everything. But like I said, I am speaking from my own experience in a conservative setting. An entire crowd of people doesn’t simultaneously turn around and stare at you. But you can feel people’s eyes on you and some people whispering sometimes so it FEELS like how the author illustrated it.
