sorry buddy, but it is pretty frequently used by racists to refer to black people, so if you're speaking in an English speaking setting,, it's best to just say "black hair" or something to avoid any issues altogether. There's a lot of crazy shit going on in the novel. Time travel, nazis, mermaid orgies, people turning into mermaids, mermaids turning into people, etc.
The merman saved desharow when he was a child, from then on he chose the child as his mate and waited for him even spying on him from time to time. Turns out the merman is also a bit good at stalking
And the red merman then held desharow hostage so he can kill agaras in the territorial battle. Desharow did end up with a lot of injuries

I was trying not to spoil things but yes, he's intelligent and has picked up a human language pretty well. Not fluently as you can see by his stilted way of speaking. There's a dictionary found in his cave that he has used to study. Merfolk are another intelligent species but they are still wildly different from humans. Consent might not even be a concept that exists in their culture. Agares is as gentle as a lamb compared to the violence the other mermen inflict on their human mates...that they capture by force. In the novel, these people seem absolutely traumatized by the experience. It's disturbing.
