Machiavellianism is derived from Machiavelli, a court master who knew how to manipulate situations for his gain, something people who lack empathy do, focus only on personal gains. This can be said for the term 'psychopath' as well. See how all the features between these terms overlap?

Agreed, that's why I'm sad a lot of people seem to hate this story solely due to the toxicity. Yes, ml is toxic and it's not hidden, but he's a well written character. While his personality disorder explains how he is primed to think, it certainly isn't used to justify him, in fact it's made clear that he could be better towards mc but he just chooses not to, since that's the easy option and what he's used to. Judging from the spoilers though, he'll eventually recognize that his behavior is going to have massively bad consequences and make his try harder, even if it defies his nature.
