This is not the situation where you can blame either of leads or expect them to change. Neither of them are obligated to stick with each other despite their feelings. So if the guy couldn't help feeling inferior and might not be able to change the way he feels, him being frank with her abt it and saying they shouldn't keep going is the right decision.
