From chapter 2 this whole empire and the royal family specifically the Emperor got me fuked up. How you finna barge into my shop, ask me to save your son, tell me I can deny your request, but then threaten to kill me if I do? On top of that the reason why your son is cursed is because several hundred years ago the empire from your lineage went and massacred a small country full of special ability people because they did not want to be up under your rule and your descendants ended up cursed.
Also in the 500 years since then, there has yet to be one ruler who didn't think to apologize or set things right for the people they had forcefully took over after recognizing the curse. They are still oppressed and treated like shit in the empire. I just had to correct someone who thought a 3 year age gap when they are both kids is creepy… it’s a historical which means she could have been sold to the duke or the dukes dad as a child bride and no one would have batted an eye about it. THAT is not what’s happening in this story so clearly that’s not the issue. Besides, majority of all couples have an age gap of up to 6 years between them. 2-4 is the average age gap between partners. It’s like people learnt a new word and can’t wait to try it out EVERYWHERE.
