they are outdated terms because i think those were used to fetishize lgbtqia relationships. new terms people use are BL and GL. although people continue to use yaoi and yuri. i'm not sure if shounen/shoujo ai are outdated terms though

Shounen ai is a Japanese translation for the word “pederasty” (English) or “Knabenliebe” (Greek), which refers to the historical Greek/Rome practice of sexual relationship between an adult man and an adolescent boy. If you look into the history of the use of the word it really just meant male adult x male child relationships, but Americans for whatever reason changed the meaning. The term you should be using no matter what is BL.

yaoi originally started coming into the Japanese market during the late 1970's / early 1980's , sold at manga doujinshi conventions such as Comic Market ( Comiket ). Yaoi works were originally called aniparo , and referred to anime - parodied doujinshi that featured an mlm relationship of characters from existing anime (mostly popular shonen). The term yaoi was coined in the early 1980's as a self - derogatory term , an acronym from the phrase yama nashi , ochi nashi , imi nashi [ translated to no climax , no punch line , no meaning ) . It was phrased this way not because it was all about sex ( yes , most of them were pornographic , but this is not why it was called yaoi ) , but because it was generally written written by amateur writers and had poor storytelling techniques ( no plot ) . As mlm fictions became more popularized , the production of yaoi died out , being replaced by Shounen - ai and June fictions , and eventually BL as we know it , by the late 1990s . Yaoi is rarely produced anymore , at least not as much as in the 1980s , and the term is only used in Japanese doujinshi circles in reference to the doujins written in similar fashion to the anl - paro made in the 1980s . This is why BL ( boy's love ) is a more accurate description of modern - day m / m manga / anime targeted towards women. An description of yaoi in the west would be PWP , in reference to ' Plot ? what Plot ? NOT ' Porn without plot ' ( this may be the source of some confusion with the term ) . I mean in a general sense it’s just weird to change a meaning of a word in your country and continue to just use it incorrectly after being corrected. Also as I kinda stated before Yaoi is so unused in Japan that they get confused when you say it bc the universal word is BL. So overall I get what you’re saying but after learning the history of the words and how it’s used in Japan there’s really no reason to say Yaoi or Shounen-ai.

Maybe in japan they will correct people because yaoi is not the commonly used word there, but in some countries they will correct people from using BL to yaoi because yaoi is the commonly used word there.

No, Japanese people use the English words “boys love” or bl. However, like you just demonstrated, weebs and non Japanese otaku tried to translate it assuming it was translated in the first place. However, it was not. The words shounen ai are basically used for shotacon contexts in Japan. That’s why they say bl in English. To have a distinguishing term and because Japan loves to borrow words from other languages.
